A $90 "common" now up to $11,000

80 years after their issue, we're still learning some cards' secrets.

We list this card at $90 NM in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards.

In a shocking twist, the winning bidder will actually receive a gallon of 80 year old ice cream.

The 2009 SCD Standard Catalog lists the '28 Harrington's Ruth at:
    NM-$5000
    EX-$2000
    VG-$1000

    Hope this helps...

Could be that the Earl Smith card was the short-print that kept people from completing their sets, and therefore limited the amount of ice cream the company had to give away.

That's the supposition put forth on my blog. (Sorry about not getting it posted until this morning.)
  • Bob,

Can you tell me if the cards that were redeemed for a prize were indeed returned to the original sender ?

If so, did that include the Babe Ruth card that was used for single redemption ? Did they have a way of "cancelling" the Ruth card - how can we tell ?

cheers for any insight you can offer.

    Hi Bob,

I just read your blog, and regarding your hypothesis about the green print...

Are any of the other Harrington's cards known to exist in both green, and black & white print? If so, that would seem to back up your idea about the cards being printed in black & white, and then exchanged for green printed ones. If not, and the Smith is the only one known in green, then I would lean to the theory that it was printed only in green to begin with.

Also, if any of the cards are known to exist in "cancelled" form, then that would lead me to believe also that the Smith was only printed in green.
