Have we ever had an auction on here?

Something like put a PSA 7 1964 Mantle with a scan up for auction. Every post would be a bid. Only bid higher than the last post if you want the card. Run it for like 24 hours. This sounds like fun.

A few months ago, I think someone had an auction for charity on here. Somebody else will need to provide a link.

  • Sounds interesting, indeed. I scanned over the Terms of Service and they mention "bid for" an item, so i think that an auction is anticipated and OK. Of course, this is not MY website and I could be wrong. Mickey71, where would you put it, BST or Vintage (or even the Registry forum)?

I don't have anything that old, but have some that might be of interest. Do you think a Friday night-Sunday evening might get even more interest?

great idea....but put a limit for each member, so that this does not become a "Store"

Why do I get the feeling this won't end well?
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Well, I think eBay better watch out!

Actually I inquired about something awhile back and this was the response I received.

We've never made a distinction on how many items a person can sell on the boards.

As Steve said, Net54 started this a few months ago, and it's worked out very well. I don't see why it wouldn't work here!

I would suggest doing it on the BST page, and titles should start with "AUCTION: Ending 9/10/09....." so people can see that part right up front.
  • scooter729scooter729 Posts: 1,730 ✭✭✭
I would add that people should post 'real' auctions, where starting prices are well below the market value, so that things will sell. Don't start a $100 card at $95. The low starting bids (generally $10 for anything) is what has made the Net54 auctions so interesting and fun to watch....
  • I have participated in a few on net54. I think it actually increases the competition if you can see the amount someone is bidding.

I distinctly remember someone doing it on here over a year ago but the thread went poof for some reason.

You would have to have all the rules for your auction in place before you started taking bids.

While I think it could work it might just wind up a place where people want something for nothing.

You start your 100.00 card at 1.00 and then when it 'sells' for 30.00 you will know what I mean.

It would not end up a store because it would be an auction with a low starting bid. In response to Steve and a card selling low--It could happen; but if it were the type of card like the Mantle I talked about it would bring decent money. I have witnessed quality items bring good money on these boards. The key word is quality. This was just an idea.

Why would you want to auction off a high dollar item on the BST board with an audience of about 5 legit buyers when eBay has thousands?
  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,261 ✭✭✭✭
First off this was just an idea; but I believe on a quality item there would be a decent size audience. Plus there are no fees whatsoever. Ebay is ridiculous. I'm not saying bust out the PSA 8 White Letter Mantle. Start with a quality $100 card. This is all just an idea.

Mickey it is a great idea and like I said one would have to have all his/her rules in place before they began accepting bids.

A reserve might come in handy as well.

For me if I have a high quality item I'd rather ebay it and have a larger audience.

One other point when Ted auctioned his cards on net 54 I think he did not have a time period.

He also chose to end the auction when he felt the price was reasonable.

That way you could not bid late. If after 2 hrs the item was at a price he liked he awarded the card to the 'winner'

I like the idea, and it would be fun to watch, but I'm with Bill on this one. Even if it is a $100 card, chances are, it is going to sell for much less compared to eBay. Whoever sells the card just better realize that they are only providing entertainment to the board and most likely not maximizing the value of their card.

69 WHITE LETTER MANTLE ???? wish i had one..lol.. promise to never collect another card after that !! I would like this auction thingy to happen...was hoping auctiva would have done that after they started their store, but not sure if anything ever materialized after that.....I am a small time ebay seller ( real small) and have found it not as fun anymore...I usually sell singles and smaller lots and by the time i get done, its alot of owrk and not making any money albeit, I sell my lower end stuff from my collection or sell for others at times.... even sportlots got into auctions i see, but wow, they are higher than feebay.....so, to finish this rant...let's get this going.. ivan

I agree that you should either have reserves or a min bid that is reasonable to start. I don't think indefinate auctions are much different than a buy post as you are basically just posting something for sale and when you get a "bid" or email offer high enough you sell. A true auction has a beginning and end that sometimes allows for people to get good deals or people to make alot more money.

Well....If the card "sells" for $30, then I'd call it a $30 card, not a $100 card. And the earlier poster hit the nail on the head with the joke about it not working b/c of a lack of shill bids. Since most people on the CU boards know each other, or at least recognize who's a regular, shill bidding wouldn't take place and thus the sales prices here would be a more accurate reflection of card's real value (more accurate than Ebay anyway). I've always thought shill bidding on Ebay was rampant, especially on cards with low starting bids. I hope someone does some auctions here, think it would be fun.

Ok let me rephrase, suppose your well documented card that generally sells for 100.00 has a VCP average of 100.00

sells for 30.00 is it still a 30.00 card?
