I need your help with a Mantle pic from a magazine

Thought somebody here might be able to help me with this. This is a picture from a magazine article and I would like to find the original magazine. The guy standing 2nd from Mantle is my grandfather, they actually grew up in the same town and got their first jobs as bellhops in the local hotel together. I only have the one page and it doesn't indicate what magazine it is from, it is page 62. The article also has a picture with Mickey and his father and states that his father passed away in 1952 (so the mag. was made after that), it is standard magazine size so that rules out Life. Any help would be appreciated.

That's pretty cool Doran. Hopefully someone has the answer for you.
  • In December 1956, the selective service of Ottawa County, Oklahoma, had classified Mantle 4F in the draft because of chronic osteomyelitis in his left ankle. As a high school freshman football player Mantle had been kicked in a practice scrimmage and the infection of the bone had never completely healed.

Quite possibly in one of the early SPORT MAGAZINE issues of 1957?

What's on the other side of the pic?

Doran ... He looks pretty young in that pic ... Sport Magazine has THE MICK on the cover of the April 1953 issue ... Maybe that's the one? GOOD LUCK!!!! Let us know when you find it. I'll keep looking.

Edited to add: He is also on the cover of SPORT Magazine - October 1956.

Doran ... here is an email address that MIGHT be able to help:

    Info@thesportgallery.com

I THINK they may have SPORT magazines from quite some time ago. Maybe you can ask them if that page was from the April 1953 issue.

    Hi Doug,

Mantle is 25 years old in that pic. I am certain that the year Mantle received his 4F was 1956.

  • Thanks for all the help so far guys. Poppaj, here is the other side, the caption says "This was the beginning of an injury ridden career. Mantle falls chasing fly hit by Mays in second game of '51 World Series. DiMaggio snared ball and called stretcher."

    Hi Doug,

Could you please post a link to the article of which you're referring?

I only know of the 1956 issuance of Mantle's 4F classification that took place at the draft board in Ottawa County, which is in Miami, Oklahoma.

  • Hi Doug,

    This article says Tulsa ....

On April 11, 1951, Mickey was re‑examined at Tulsa, but again he was deferred because of his ankle injury. This was to happen again, on August 20, 1951, when the poison penmen once more forced Selective Service to call him in. A fourth time, November 3, 1952, Mickey underwent another examination and this time he was deferred again because of the knee injury he sustained in the 1951 World Series.

See page 68 ... the pgh beginning "Yankee infielder Jerry Coleman". It's not where I first saw it, but it does mention 1953 and talks about his 2nd 4F.

Based upon the # of games Coleman played in 1952 (11) and 1953 (8), I will ASS U ME those were his war years.

    Hi Doug,

I see where he had multiple 4Fs, but the photo in question is concerning only the 4F that he received at the Miami (Ottawa County) OK Draft Board.

The only reference by year, concerning Mantle's Ottawa County (Miami) Oklahoma 4F, is 1956.

We need to find that magazine .... that's all there is to it image

God I hope somebody locates one soon!

Whitey Ford, hero of the 1950 World Series, was drafted into the service, as was Billy Martin, who otherwise would have participated in Stengel's pre-camp instructional school. Other young players waited for the call, but a different cloud hovered over Mantle. To the disbelief of all who saw Mantle fly down the first baseline, the military had determined that Mickey was 4-F physically unable to perform combat duties. He suffered from osteo-myelitis, an infection of the bone in his left leg. The condition was the result of an injury he suffered playing high school football and, despite occasional flare ups, was impossible for anyone other than a doctor to detect.

The 4-F deferment was issued back in 1949, before Mantle had been subject to public scrutiny. But as the newspapers began to tout the young slugger, questions arose about his mysterious injury. It was one thing for the New York Yankees to connive to win the World Series every year (or so it seemed), but now to swing this 4-F ruling was too much. Mantle himself took the brunt of the criticism, but the draft board and the Yankee club were also targets. "We aren't sending boys over there to kick the enemy," wrote one skeptic.

  • I did contact The Sport Gallery and they said they could not find the article in any past issues of Sport magazine. The portion of the caption from the other side that says "This was the beginning of an injury ridden career." makes me wonder if the article wasn't perhaps from later in his career. I talked to my grandfather today and he said he was sure it was from a magazine but couldn't remember the name or what year the magazine came out, he did say that picture is from the spring of 1951 and it was taken in Miami, Oklahoma by photographers from the Tulsa World newspaper.

makes me think it might have been something from the 60s or early 70s as maybe an article on a retrospective on his career

lo and behold, the same picture appears in the 09/18/09 SCD on page 32 (photo # 658); You may wish to contact Kelly Eisenhauer who has put together the Mantle series for SCD and has one of the most complete Mantle collections in the hobby (www.hofmemories.com) for assistance with it

  • I wonder what kind of paper it is. Is it more thick newsprint stock or glossy?
It could be a page from a thin, large-format paperback book called Mickey Mantle Slugs It Out (by Julian May).
The reason I say this is that that book had to do primarily with Mantle's injuries over the years and the two pages you have do touch on his health issues. It was published in 1974, which is consistent with the typeface of the captions in the story. One seller describes the book as having "over 40 b/w photos that aren't seen too often." The one with his father may fall into that category as well.

    Just a thought.

EdITED TO ADD: nope. Checked with a seller on ebay. this book only goes up to page 42. Worth a shot.

  • Thanks again for the help guys.

Mike, I originally thought the same thing, but the article says "By this time, Mantle not only had filled out and grown but he was displaying the terrific leg speed which still is one of his great talents. Except that he could run much faster then than he can now." which would indicate to me that the article was written while he was still playing.

Ironmanfan, thanks for the info, I did contact Kelly Eisenhauer, but unfortunately he did not know what magazine the article appeared in as his photo is an original from the negative. I emailed him back asking if he would be willing to sell me a nice copy of that photo as it would be a great addition for me, hopefully that works out.

I'll keep everyone posted if I find out more.

Thanks for the time saver. Was it determined that the pic is NOT from a Sport magazine as well? I have some of those too, plus some random magazines from the 60's. I'll at least check the "not so common" baseball mags from the 60's. Quit ruining my mystery quest!!! haha, just kidding. Stuff like this gives me a nice excuse to look through all my old mags, which is really nostalgic and fun. Hey, another thought, could this be from a Yankees yearbook?
