1950's original sports negatives...help???

Hey my name is Chris Payne I was writing to you because I had bought a
storage space at an auction and I came up with some negatives of
1950's sports photos. I am not sure how to sell these or what to do
with them, as they could be worth money. They came from a photographer
Allan chambers I believe and it was part of the camberwell collection.
The negatives I have include Jackie Robinson, babe Ruth and Ted
Williams smoking cigar together in marine suit, Joe DiMaggio, yogi
berra with his son, Phil rizzuto, whitey ford. You have any ideas?
Thanks for your time.

The first thing I would do is bring them to a professional photo lab to have the negs cleaned and scanned. After that you could post some small scans, but make sure you use good watermarks so the scans don't get stolen.

Then I'm sure you could get some great thoughts on whether to sell the negs or sell photo copies.

    And welcome!

There is a guy over at Net 54 that should be contacted.

    Cycleback is his handle.

    He also has a website.

I think his first name is David.

Good luck, I would think they have some value.

edited to add: Welcome to the boards Chris!

If you're going to sell prints be sure you have the rights to do so. If the photographer was free lance he owns the copyright, even if he's not in possession of the negatives. If he was an employee his employer owns the copyright.
You also will have to deal with model releases from the estates of the players if you're selling the prints commercially. Step carefully, it could cost you a huge headache if not done correctly.

if they are high quality and you own the copyright on them you can always syndicate them thru a stock agency.

That's a good point - "if you own the copyright".
Even if you own the negative, I believe the rights to the negative can be owned by an agency or news organization (assuming the photographer worked for one).
If he freelanced, maybe the family owns the rights?
You'll have to determine this first, I believe.

I'd love to see some of those pics, though.

Griffins is right on the money with his thoughts. Either way, I'd love to see some scans of what you have. Additionally, you are coming across as someone who just wants to move them and get what they are worth. No one is going to really offer you any fair money without seeing the negs or knowing more than a year and a name. You really need to take Griffins advice and then do some research.
