HUGE COLLECTION ADVICE ???

Hi all...need some advice on this situation......a friend of my brothers asks me to look at his collection he wants to sell......the basketball is from 70-89....about 100 assorted jordan inserts, about 200 kobe inserts and rookies and about 300 vince carter rookies inserts...loads of other superstar inserts....the hockey is about 200 wayne gretzky cards and inserts from early 80's on....the football has about 2,00 dan marino inserts/cards and the rest is baseball...BASEBALL====lots of superstars from like 72-80 and then THE ROOKIES===there are rookies and 2/3rd year cards of mattingly,boggs, sandberg,puckett,gwynn..loads of rookies and 2/3 years like fleer and donruss.. must be about 500 or so of these.. what is the best way i can help him sell these as one huge collection??? I know the market is sort of weak now.. will it ever pick up for these??? also forgot to mention about 1,000 griffey jr. rookies all gem mint....along with about 100 graded randy johnson rookies.......what is your advice???????? thanks for your read on this long winded writing.... thanks, ivan

1,000 Griffey Rookies? 100 Graded Johnson rookies? Everything before that sounds like junk. If he really has 1,000 Griffey rookies sell all those in a lot. Sell the 100 Graded Johnson Rookies in a lot and then sell all the rest in one lot. Take lots of pics and be prepared to get pennies on the dollar for that crap.

Allen's right that some of it should be sold off in lots
But I wouldn't call early 80s Gretzkys junk
The way he should sell it depends on how much time he wants to spend

You mention the basketball is from 70-89, but only mention Jordan, Kobe, and Carter cards. Anything significant from 1970 to 1985 in there?

Also, and not to "nit-pick" but I believe Kobe and Carter arrived after 1989.

was just writing down some of the stuff i saw.. and yes, you are correct, kobe arrived in 96 and carter in 98.. there were about 150 cards from the 70 tll boys, loads of early 70's.. all superstars, no commons and some fleer 87-90... the newer stuff was like from 95-01 i would say... mostly inserts, rookies, garnett, kobe, shaq,duncan,david robinson,jordan,stocton, yes, i did not go thru all the cards, piece by piece,....70's cards of thurmond, havlicek,chamberlain,baylor,hawkins,bing,frazier and the like.. again, nobody less than a star or superstar,, hope that clarifies a bit for you...

Scan the cards and put them on the BST board a few lots at a time. Group them together in a way that makes sense...(all the same player, set,etc...) That will give you an idea if anyone wants any of it. Most of the higher dollar cards these days are certified in high grades. You may have a Kobe Bryant card that someone is only willing to pay $2.00 for raw that might bring 20X that amount if it was PSA Gem 10! I'm not saying you have to send EVERY single card in that huge collection to be graded, but they certainly wont bring the money you might have expected being that they are raw! Good luck!

Virtually anything between 1988 and 1993, with few exceptions is not now nor will ever be worth anything. Non Upperdeck Griffey Rookies can usually be had for a buck a piece (even less). This goes for all major sports. There are exceptions like 1989 Score Football, 1992 Bowman Baseball, etc. etc., but more than likely, all "Huge" collections from that time period are loaded with 1988-1992 Donruss, Topps and Fleer and would have more value if used to heat your house by burning them in the fireplace.

I see it walk into my store almost on a daily basis. Guy comes in "Hey. I got a huge collection of baseball cards, theyre worth a lot, are you interested?" I reply, "Of course". Guy brings in boxes of beat up 1988 Donruss, 1990 Topps and 1991 Fleer and says "These all use to book for about $3,000, but I would gladly sell them to you for only $2,000". My reply is, "I would gladly sell you the same thing, except in MINT condition for $100". His reply "No, youre trying to rip me off"

Most people dont realize how many cards were printed during that time and that stuff that was worth quite a bit when there were 10 times as many collectors 20 years ago is worth very little now. Honestly, if someone walked into my store and had 500 1989 Fleer Ken Griffey Rookies, I doubt I would even want to buy them at 50 cents each.

jordan cards all seem very collectable.. and some of his .. what i thought were crummy inserts from the 90s.. sell for quite a bit. the catch is they have to be psa 10.. unless its 86 fleer nothing is really worth that much unless its gem mint. I mostly collected football cards throughout the 80s.. i thought i had a pretty nice collection.. i have all of the hof rookies from 81 montana to the 91 stadium club favre.. unfortunately.. nothing is higher than a psa 9. i would say my entire collection is worth less than 500 bucks.. i should have just got a table at a local card show back in day and traded for unopened boxes or just sold it and bought msft stock.

so it seems most guys here think its best to get cards graded....does it pay to do say 2nd year cards like 84 donruss sandberg or gwynn and what grades would he need to make any money on them??

What most people are saying is that unless you have key RCs from key sets the lot is going to take more time and effort selling than it's worth. Second year or inserts of players are only worth anything in PSA 10 condition, now are experienced enought to recoginze the difference between 8, 9 and 10 grades? If not you will lose all your money.

Try and find someone to sell it to BEFORE you buy is the only way to buy a lot like this. Even 70s cards aren't worth much in EXMT shape which I believe most of what you have would be.

I dont think my $500 was that bad for mostly junk/overproduced stuff.

I would be happy to take $500 for my opc, the ones that are left are worth $50. You should know that several of the ones that sold were sent into PSA and got 8's and 9's. Ill expect your payment immediately via paypal. It's been a pleasure doing business with you.

seriously, without seeing the cards and holding them its all just a crapshoot, its not like your sitting on a lot of 52 topps cards.
