Can someone show me a picture of the edge lettering of a Directory Era French 5-francs?

If someone could show me a picture of the edge lettering of a L'an 4 or 5 Five Francs that would be great.

Thanks.

I don't have an edge view. But if you're doing research on these Union et Force 5 Francs you might find this interesting. It is Dupre's sketch that the obverse was based on. Note Hercules standing on the crown and scepter which did not make it onto the coin. There's a couple other small changes. I thought it a cool looking sketch.

    It's from the article:

Hercules and the Radical Image in the French Revolution

Let me know if you need it.

Will, I did find a partial picture of the edge of a L'an 4 in the 2009 edition of Le Franc, page 318. It was too close to the binding to get all of it. But I got most of what was there. (Le Franc has some interesting pictures of what appears to be different varieties on pages 311 to 313.)

Rick, he was looking for the edge view of a "L'an 4 or 5" which is around 1795 to 1797. image The edge was different by the 1870's issues. I didn't know that either until I researched for this post.

The edge of the L'an 4 to L'an 11 (1795 to 1803) Hercules five Francs said:

    GARANTIE NATIONALE = NATIONAL SECURITY

The 1848 to 1849 and the 1870 to 1878 Hercules five Francs said:

DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE = GOD PROTECTED FRANCE

I'm just learning too. French coins are not my main collecting focus, but I like them. I find the history interesting and the designs beautiful. image

  • Thanks guys.

I'm trying to convince NGC that my L'An 4-A MS64 is a specimen or proof. Apparantly the fact that it's struck in a collar (for a series in which the business strikes were struck without collars) isn't enough to convince them it's special.
