8/27/09 - Max Update

Been a few weeks since the last update. As of today, Max is 30 days old, and exaclty 30 weeks in gestation time. Just a few grams shy of 2 pounds, with a body about the size of an over-stuffed Chipotle burrito.
Since birth, he has gained about a 1/2 pound. A little less than they would like, but still a gain.
He came off the ventilator yesterday, which was HUGE. He made the transition from the full ventilator (which basically does the breathing for him) to a modified c-pap machine (like the ones they give poeple who snore or stop breathing during thier sleep). So, instead of a tube down his windpipe, now he has a little nose-cup strapped on that gives him small bursts of air mixed with oxygen (about 30 a minute) to make sure his lungs stay open. As long as he remains on the c-pap, he has to do ALL the breathing himself. So far, so good. We have been warned, however, that it's usually an on-again, off-again ordeal with the ventilator, so he may eventually have to go back on if he tires himself out too much.
Other than that, he's doing good for such a little guy. Sorry, no picture this time, but next update I'll try to post another.
Hope everyone is well.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Been thinking about you and your family and will continue to send good thoughts your way.

Those little guys can beat amazing odds, and with the advances in medical equipment and procedures, the odds get a big bump. I'm praying for little Max, as my little guy was born at 28 weeks, 2lbs 12 oz, and 2 1/2 months in the NICU. Not fun, but you're strength will be his strength, so you hang in there as well.
