Thoughts on KSA graded hockey

There are some vintage KSA graded opc hockey cards I want to crossover to PSA. The seem to be the "industry standard" in Canada for hockey cards. Too risky or is KSA reputable for graded vintage hockey?

Not a good reputation. PSA and SGC are the only reputable grading companies for vintage and pre-war hockey. I would recommend crack out and submit raw.
    Good luck.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I have probably sent about 50 KSA cards to PSA and SGC to cross. I cannot recall too many that crossed directly. If I get a one grade drop I am usually pretty happpy.

Does SGC crossover to PSA pretty well, such as a SGC 88 going over to PSA 8 or better?

  • I'm 3 for 4 crossing over SGC 9's to PSA 9's. The 3 that crossed over successfully were '73 Topps baseball. The 1 that was unsuccessful was a '75 Hostess Twinkies hand cut, which I later cracked out and submitted raw; it came back as an 8. Based upon my one experience with KSA, I'd stay away from them (one reason being that they don't seem to take centering into account much and they don't have an OC qualifier). I attempted to cross over a '73 OPC Mays KSA 8 to PSA 8, which was rejected. I later cracked it out and submitted it raw; it came back as a 5! The centering is great, but I suppose they didn't like the corners (which are always a bit tough to figure out on rough cut OPC's), although I feel that it should have gotten at least 6 and possibly as high as 7.5. I just might crack it out and submit it again someday just to see what happens.
  • Not PSA but I bought a KSA 8 1977 Topps C3PO error and it crossed to a GAI 8.5

KSA is a mixed bag. There's accurate stuff, there's overgraded stuff, and there's altered cards they missed. If the seller's not in Canada, I wouldn't go anywhere near it unless it's cards too cheap to be worth crossing over.
