Does anyone see a wrinkle or crease on this PSA 4 '52 Mantle?

I may need to ask for bigger pics, but this card looks extremely nice for a 4. Wondering if there's a crease or a wrinkle given the super nice centering and surface. Thoughts?

    It's pretty, but it's a mess.

The seller must KNOW there is ZERO chance of a grade-bump.
I don't like his claims to the contrary.

Blow the thing up and you will see the hurt spots.

I always hate it when sellers talk about a bump like it's a slam dunk. As I read almost every day on the boards, that is not the case.

This raises a related question: can a 4.5 have a slight wrinkle or crease (allowed under the criteria for 4, but not for 5)

.5 is a reward when the card is "special."

    The holder is recent.

There is no way that card deserves a .5.

    BUT, the centering is special.

    ...........

    PSA says,

    Half-Point Grades:

Cards that exhibit high-end qualities within each particular grade, between PSA Good 2 and PSA Mint 9, may achieve a half-point increase. While PSA graders will evaluate all of the attributes possessed by a card in order to determine if the card may be eligible, there will be a clear focus on centering.

Generally speaking, a card must exhibit centering that is 5-10% better, at minimum, than the lowest % allowed within a particular grade. It is important to note that there may be cases where the overall strength of the card, such as the quality of the corners and print, will give the card the edge it needs despite the fact that it may exhibit only marginal centering for the grade. This is especially true for cards that find themselves within the bottom half of the PSA 1-10 scale.

Finally, keep in mind that qualifiers will not apply to grades that achieve the half-point increase since, by definition; these cards have to exhibit high-end qualities within the grade in order to warrant consideration. For example, there will not be cards graded PSA NM-MT-Plus 8.5 OC or PSA EX-MT-Plus 6.5 PD since the half-point is reserved for high-end cards within each grade.

  • There's something on that card the seller is not talking about. Ask for a bigger, better scan and if they don't pull the cord and move on.

I would bet good money that the card has a crease somewhere. I've seen many PSA 5s with hairline creases visible only with a 10x loupe.

I think you guys are probably right about a crease somewhere. For me, I would never buy a card like thinking that it will bump. The description on this thing has far too much puffery for my liking. I think I'd have to see this thing in person.

Maybe next time I'm visiting the in-laws in SoCal. image

i THINK THE TOP LEFT CORNER has a bend.. and potential wrinkle on the back scan on the top
of the card about 1/2 inch down in the center you can see some distortion

Blow it up between 200% and 400% and you can see
    the hurts clearly.

  • That card is a true psa 4 . Notice the bend as previously mentioned. Great centering though.

quite frankly when a seller quotes NM/MT price in his titles for vg-ex to ex cards, I don't even bother looking at their stuff.

as for this card , there is something there , the corners look pretty soft when you look at the scans of the front and back together and the 1 corner looks completely bent
  • TonyCTonyC Posts: 1,401 ✭✭✭
Oaksey, I thought the same thing. If you look at the scan of the back of the card, the top left corner, which is the top right corner when looking at the front, looks like it got dogeared a little or something.

I did that already. Haven't heard back yet, though. I'll post his response.

My Guess is a light crease in border below "M" in "Mickey". Otherwise corner wear brings it down to VG/EX.

Wow $16K for that??? UH OK

    At least there's no hype.

Check out the 52T Mays PSA 8 that he also has listed. "Virtually perfect centering". Yikes.

    His response:

Yes, 3/8"faint surface wrinkle or scratch?at base of card. Not visible to naked eye-only under strong magnification

Sure has some nice cards, but not really a fan of sellers who say in every auction that their card deserved the next grade up. Really? Every card!
