Is this the reason the old Gai didn't last? Can we say overgraded?

link to a Barry Sanders 1989 score rookie Gai gem mint 9.5

After looking at up close pictures of this card it can probably maybe hit a 8.5 I actually have many bgs 9's and psa 9's 20 of each. Overproduced yes! But still a great card! 1989 Score Barry Sanders Gai 9.5

  • Looks pretty decent to me. Ive seen worse in PSA slabs. BGS(I group them with, Garage and Basement TPGers like PRO etc..
  • Notice white spec on upper right corner. You think Beckett is in the same category as Pro? Really?

Back in the day both PRO and PSA were king of the hill. I will say that PRO , like Beckett has a great slab thats impossible to tamper.

  • Haha, PSA is the Pioneer and King. Beckett is second on the list only because I like their modern stuff. SGC is solid too. Pro I have no confidence in.

I'd hope that pple are being facetious even mentioning PRO in the same breath as PSA or Beckett..

Edit: Unless you're a collector of worthless and obviously trimmed and overgraded cards that is..

I think the card looks pretty nice, but then again, I still think the art of differentiating between 8.5 to 10s is quite nebulous and probably depends more on the mood of the grader than the condition of the card.

It'd be tough for any grading company to try to enter a market dominated by PSA , SGC, and Beckett.

No one wants to buy cards graded by a newbie grading company, and no one would want to submit their valuable cards to a newbie grading company.

The reasons GAI bit the big one were

    1. They graded alot of cards with problems that PSA & SGC had rejected, such as alot of 55 Bowmans with factory wrinkles as 8s and 9s.

    2. Their pack grading which was tops in the hobby for awhile started having issues with reseals.

    3. Later GAI had issues with crossing them over to PSA and that led to confidence issues among buyers.

  • people....please. PRO was the king of the Hill back when Dave Parker was elected to the HOF....OH, wait... forget about it.
  • Here is What I would recommend Psa first and foremost on any commons for set registry and stars and anything . Beckett grading services for Modern Basketball and Modern Shiny techno auto baseball Kind of stuff nothing better than the Pristine auto matched with the pristine card same goes with the auto cards for all sports . I just like how Beckett offers that pristine grade. Beckett Vintage grading I would recommend any vintage autos with Jsa as well as Psa. I think Market is more strong with Psa and Sgc not saying that Beckett is Soft but it goes for the psa registry. Sgc I love the holders on the Pre-war stuff , Strictest graders in my opinion sent many Play balls in to them , nothing gets past them ! I think that these three will always dominate the card world, sadly to say No other company can survive in this Market! Global , well the New Global I sure Hope that they do succeed. I will send some test cards into them to see if they pass through . Gma needs to be the graders specializing in the Bad Wax years image any rookie under $4 bucks should be sent into them they actually are pretty consistent with grading. That being said they are a low class grading service none the less, so anything vintage is a No-no. These bad wax years shouldn't even be sent into the big guys send them to the little big fish lol image haha

  • << <i>These bad wax years shouldn't even be sent into the big guys >>

That statement along with your statement regarding PRO dominating the market before the internet boom, shows your complete lack of knowledge regarding grading.

"Bad wax years" in PSA 10 holders, especially rookies, will always sell as long as the PSA registry is in existence.

PRO never dominated anything other than slabbing altered cards. PSA and SGC came in the market before PRO and that was long after the internet was in full force.

<< <i>Sgc I love the holders on the Pre-war stuff , Strictest graders in my opinion sent many Play balls in to them , nothing gets past them ! >>

I have busted quite a few SGC holders. Have had 2 that SGC missed a wrinkle that was clearly visible once the card was removed from the slab. Had a 1975 Topps common crack from an SGC 98 slab and subbed to PSA. Came back a PSA 7.

Don't put blind faith in any grading company just based on what you have read regarding their reputation.
  • I never said anything about Pro dominating the market !!! Find out where I said that? I bashed the company Goof! That is worthless crapola ! image

  • Lack of knowledge are you Kidding ? Please you Do not Know me ? Pro grading services is for the Dilusional Flea-market Jokester! Along with the rest of the Bottom Feeders Fgs, Pca , SnaggleTooth and all the rest out in the World . I very well understand How to grade , I didn't say I think every card passing through each service is 100% accurate all the time. I just State from personal Experience. Again where in the heck did I say Pro dominated the Market ????? It was the guy under my comment ? image Gma was just a slight joke a Gma 10 barry bonds 86 Topps traded Rookie sells for $4-$5 dollars all day It's not worth the $2 dollars to even send card to them. But for $0.99 they encapsulate which isn't bad at all really!

I would almost guarantee that there are members on this board that can grade cards better than any of the grading companies out there.
