White Plains pick up and a "Close" call

Hey all,

My wife and I are in NY on a short vacation. I was able to attend the White Plains show for the day on Sunday. There was a ton of nice stuff there, but most way over priced. I did pick up a couple of nice Carlton cards from
a super nice lady dealer who was actually interested in talking to me. I also picked up a 1962 Post Mantle that is a little off grade, but still a Mantle. I didn't have any from his playing days in my collection.

While there I talked to a nice guy from Kevin Savage cards. He had some sweet autographs there, he pulled out a box of old autograph albums and let me just look while we talked about the players who signed. It was
a lot of fun, and I think the guys name was Pat, a really nice guy. Even though I was only looking, he took a good half an hour talking with me, as no one else came by during that time. He had a vintage Mantle autograph
for sale that he had authenticated by JSA for sale that I fell in love with. After some walking around, getting Frank Howard, Juan Marichal and Whitey Fords autographs, I decided to take the plunge and purchase the Mantle
autograph. He said from the album it came from, they figured it was either a 1951 or 52 autograph, either way a vintage Mantle sig. He gave me what I thought was a very fair price, and we were both pleased.

On my way back my wife sent me a text from Grand Central Station saying that Ron Howard and Glenn Close were filming public service announcements and she was hanging there waiting for me. Glenn Close is
my wifes favorite actress so she was thrilled just to be there watching. I got there and found her and we both went to watch Glenn do some publicity shots and such, just hanging out and seeing something we
don't see in the sticks of Maine. Well, after about 20 minutes, she and her group start walking by us. She has done some fund raising for the laboratory we work for, so when she walked by and said hi to us, I told her
that we work for the lab. She stopped and said, "Really? Where do you work there?" We told her and she just lit up saying how much she loved the white mice. She turned to her sister and told her that our lab was the
"Fort Knox" of genetics research. She then chatted us up for a couple of minutes, asking where we lived, why were we in NYC and such. She then offered to take a pic with us both! The first time the flash didn't go off,
so she took the camera, showed her assistant how to do the flash, put her arms around us both and took another. She then thanked us for our work, shook our hands and bid us goodbye. Needless to say, my wife
was like a little girl, just about to explode with excitement. And I got to say, she is even more beautiful in person than you see on TV. Wow, she is a natural beauty! And she was so very nice, which just made the
experience even more memorable for us both.

The rest of the trip has been a blast, I've been ragged on by Yankee fans everywhere because of my Red Sox hat. But it has all been very friendly busting, "How does it feel to be in second?", "Your a Sox fan? Your not
allowed on the boat!" kinda stuff, just fun. NY'ers are good people, they've been good to us.

One more day in the big city, and back home on Wednesday. image

Look at the stop marks at the bottom of the "T" and the "L". There should be flow at that point in the sig. I think that is a dead give away. But what do I know.

I'd still try and send the Mantle to JSA , what will you be out $100 ? And if it's authenticated it will be worth at least a grand.

it might be hard to get it back from the guy now, but you're right I think it might be worth it.
  • It takes a high level of douchebaggery to hijack a great thread with a personal agenda.

I wholeheartedly agree. Whom do you think hijacked it?

I was comparing it because he posted in the other thread that he was gonna post a pic of his for comparison.
  • Fine, then copy his pic in your thread and compare them. Don't hijack his thread just because everyone on this forum and PSA all said yours was a fake.

lmao, it isn't mine in the first place and I don't care whether its fake or not. I didn't hijack anything and have not responded to that guy that keeps following me around taking jabs. Either way, I dont appreciate the douchbag comment and I highly doubt you'd say that to my face. I have never said one goddamn word to you about all of the smartass comments you make because I think they are fine as I make them too, but you had no idea that the OP posted that he'd post a picture of his for comparison which is the reason I did it in the first place.

My comment about the story was to Justin.

edit out that stupid picture while you are at it.

And I'll tell you here what I tried to tell you in PM

I like the Mantle sig. It might make a nice custom card.

NY is a fun place to visit; I lived there for almost 4-years in the 60s - 70s.

The GC story struck me as cute.

"..We told her and she just lit up saying how much she loved the white mice..."

I knew she was a bunny fan, but the mice fact is news.

I would definately try and buy a 1st generation wire photo of Mantle from early in his career and have it matted and framed.

LOL! I'm glad we don't work with rabbits, that might have been awkward. image

I had thought about a custom card, but I think I am going to leave it whole. The name and picture taped to the paper add to the charm of the piece, at least to me. All of the sigs in the albums were like that.
I plan on doing what Morgoth said and finding a photo I really like and having it matted and framed with just the signature showing. I'm just thrilled to have a vintage Mantle autograph, I never thought I would find or
    be able to afford one.

Thank you all for the kind words. We are having a blast and I'm afraid today is our last day here. We are going to the Museum of Natural History, then to a local bakery in NJ (Carlos from Cake Boss) and heading home in the
morning. I would ask if anyone knew of any local card shops, but I think my wife would shoot me. image I think I spent enough at the show. image

Great New York story. Nice auto, too.

Even better Glenn Close story. It's always nice to hear about a gracious celebrity. They seem like such a rare breed these days.

So that's what was going on. I often see film crews set up in Grand Central, but I normally just push my way through to get to work. Unfortunately, that's just what I was doing over the weekend, so I didn't make it to the show. I'm glad you had a good time, and let us know how that auto turns out!
