Those slabs are a pain in the butt for me to crack. PSA is much easier. Good luck on the crackout, that's a nice looking card.

Scratch that...brain lapse on my behalf...

I think it has a shot at crossing.

Does the card have a tilt?

    I would leave it alone.

Doubt PSA would give it a 7.5.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

    Hi Ron

What does the lower right corner look like?

Is it strong enough to keep the other 3 in the 8 range?

Overall, it looks pretty much where it belongs - could drop to 7 in a PSA holder if the lower right is soft.

The scan's tilted more than the card. But it does have a slight tilt to it. Corners are strong except the lower right. Given my luck with Mantles going to PSA, I should probably leave it alone. image

Man up and just do it image. It has a shot, I am scared of BVG and GAI cards though.

send it in crossover service. I weighed those exact options when I was considering buying it, but I think you can make money putting in on the bay exactly like it is going by another BVG 7.5 auction that recently ended.

Straight 7 Ron. If you're happy w/ that, crack away.
  • nightcrawlernightcrawler Posts: 5,110 ✭✭

Great card, I think it has a chance to cross, you should go for it. I use tile cutters on BVG holders.
  • hammeredhammered Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭
    I also think it's a 7
Looks like there are some issues with the surface
    very nice card though
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Unless i needed it for a registry set I'd leave it as is.

Would it sell for more in a PSA 7 slab?

    I have an idea.

Make a thread about cracking it but don't crack it!

I agree with the crossover. Its a strong 7 maybe a shot at an 8. Either way that card would look much better in a PSA holder.
  • The only thing that would bother be is the slab it is currently in. I cracked a Ripken rookie out of one yesterday and wounded 2 dogs, my daughter got plastic in her eye and I stabbed myself with the screwdriver.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
I cracked one BVG holder and I simply put it in a vise and used a hack saw.

GAI is also tuff, vise and I used a hacksaw.

    That way no flying pieces.

lower right corner looks like it may keep this from a comparable grade from other companies...although hard to tell definitively from a scan, of course
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

nice card ..I'd say it could get a 7.5 from psa but you just never know.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
The lower right corner may look worse then it is. I think it may be because of the ruff cut?

    My concern is the tilt.

I think the corners and the snow max it out at a 7.5.

Ron ... fro the pic it looks like the top left corner and the bottom right corner have a little touch to them ... IMO PSA would come back with a 7. HOWEVER, back in the day that would have been looked at as a NRMT raw card, if not better. It would look AMAZING in a raw set (But TPG have made keeping nice cards raw a bad financial decision.)

I don't think the miscut (side to side cut tilt and drag) will be much of a problem. But there's something about that top edge that bothers me and suggests it might come back EOT.

    VCP Averages:

    BVG 7.5 $415.00

    PSA 7 $393.60
    PSA 7.5 $565.00

Looks like a solid upside, provided your eye tells you it is atleast a PSA 7
  • corvette1340corvette1340 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭
This was a comparable BVG 7.5 that ended recently. It looks like the seller has deleted the picture but one is still on the main ended auction search page. It also had strong centering.

The numbers above don't lie. You could always cross over and set the limit to 7 so in case PSA decides to go lower it won't.

It's on my desk staring at me right now.

    Here are the options:

    1) Crack it as intended.

    2) List as BIN on Ebay.

    3) Sell it to Corvette at a big markup. image

Or is it simply another case of you not understanding?

lol, Rainman, I'm saying that if it was yours I wouldn't buy it for $50 even though it's worth a lot more. It's kind of like the illegal immigrants that have lawn services in my area. Even though they only charge about half of my regular lawn guy, I won't let them cut my yard because I hate illegal immigrants/drains on society.

Wonder why he doesn't take his own advice?

Looks like another thread soon to be down the crapper due to this bickering back and forth.. there is a PM function guys...

    Back to the topic..

Ron nice card and you have a good eye on Vintage and obviously a much better look at the card since you have it in hand.. what do you think?

The only way I would send it PSA is cracked out.. Not a big fan of the crossover service for any of the Big grading companies myself..

Would love to see how many of Tom's relatives came into this country. I'm sure there's a few that didn't pass through proper channels. Heck, traced my family back to the mid 1600's and the Port of Philadelphia. But there are always a few branches that get lost or misplaced along the way...

Your best shot at an 8 is to crack it.

Your best shot at a 7.5 is through the crossover service.

That doesn't make much sense, but I've had so many cards go from 7.0 to 8 after resubmitting them that I'm convinced the graders don't have a good feel for that half grade. Otherwise, at least some of them should have gotten 7.5's the first time.
  • jfkheatjfkheat Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭✭✭
I had good luck cracking BVG slabs and submitting them to PSA. I had a 56 Mantle go from a BVG 4.5 to a PSA 7. These were from a few years ago when the BVG slabs had the subgrades listed.
