OT - Tired of Vick, Stallworth, etc. Post Your Feel Good Stories

After reading the Vick, Stallworth, Pitno stories about how they have abused their star power.

I wanted to post a story about the "Good" athletes.

This story was in today's St. louis Post Dispatch:

Encarnacion continues to face hurdles in his life.

By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
08/14/2009

Former Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion remains active in running and expanding his charity even as the eye injury that cost him his baseball career continues to cause his vision to deteriorate.

Encarnacion has mostly removed himself from the public's glare since August 2007, when while standing in the on-deck circle he was struck in left eye by a foul ball. Several Cardinals have kept in touch, though the team has been unsuccessful when inviting him to return to the ballpark or visit spring training. A news report surfaced in the Dominican Republic in July, complete with quotes, that Encarnacion was organizing a run for political office. His fiancee said Thursday that the story wasn't true. It couldn't be.

Encarnacion was at a Jacksonville, Fla., eye doctor on the day he was supposed to have talked about this fictional candidacy in his native Dominican.

"At the time he was supposedly doing this, he was getting his eye checked," said Maryfrances Gainey, Encarnacion's fiancee. She added about his health: "He's doing as well as he can. His vision is getting worse. He's going to need more surgery down the road."

The force of the foul ball that hit him during a game at Busch Stadium shattered his orbital bone and caused enormous trauma to his eye. He has been unable to return to baseball because his vision has not improved. He remains extremely sensitive to light and has 20/800 vision. Encarnacion hit .280 with 28 home runs and 126 RBIs in two seasons with the Cardinals, and he was part of the 2006 World Series championship team.

Encarnacion, who lives in Florida, still has an annual presence in the Cardinals clubhouse: Hand towels he and his fiancee sew are sent to the clubhouse to be autographed by players and returned so that they can be given to children who are hospitalized with cancer. Recently, Encarnacion sewed pillow cases for the Pillowcases for Cancer Kids program, and he has done other projects through his charitable organization, the Juan Encarnacion Foundation. That included assisting an auction to benefit St. Joseph School for the Blind in New Jersey, and other forthcoming endeavors.

"He's continued helping," Gainey said. "Just because he's retired doesn't mean he should stop doing whatever he can."

I just edited my thread title about my 63F set - which is a 'feel good' story about the major leaguer Albie Pearson who at the age of 74 is still giving back as a minister who takes care of the children nobody wants.

Not when your a convicted felon playing in the NFL.

If it was Peter down the street, then yes it would be a parole violation.

dhnvnfffgfklfgdl is what I want to say to voice my opinion.

I'm sure we all hope that Michael Vick has a great year and signs a multi million dollar contract extension. No doubt he would give most of it to good causes like Encarnacion and Pearson.

Bill- Yes thats all true, we would be working at McDonalds for minimum wage.

We can get shot at in combat, and shoot back, and go through tons of turmoil (which I have) but all in all....

If you can't throw football 50 yards, hit a baseball 330+ feet (which I still can with a wood bat, did it a few weeks ago a few times) , dunk a basketball......

    it doesn't matter.

Athletes will always be able to return to their sport, unless their name is Pete Rose (who should by the way be a Hall of Famer)

and i still don't understand this one. no crime committed.
    a little gambling, big deal.
they done a lot worse and vick still gets to play. the other homo will get to play next year.

we need the NFL president's email address.
i'm sure he'll get tons of hate mail.

On a morals scale I am not sure Stallworth should be in with the other two. By most accounts he is a "good guy." He drank too much and drove. How many on these boards have done that in their life? In college, maybe once or twice.... Could have easily been anybody who ever drank and drove in their life. Just thinking out loud here. Taking it a step further Stallworth was, up until his crime, a role model in his community. He grew up in a very rough neighborhood, made it to the NFL, bought his mom a house, took care of his family, gave back to the community, etc.... He was a feel good story before. I hope he, and the others, can rebuild their lives.
