Isn't it about time for....

...a 1st in, 1st out policy at PSA? It really gets aggravating to see orders on the shared orders page that were received weeks or a month after my subs were logged in. If you look on today's shared order page, there are 20 subs on there that have popped but were received at least a week after 2 of mine.

I have also yet to here a legitimate reason why this isn't the policy.

obviously if someone pays for a different level of service, that would possibly get their sub back before the monthly special.

But there is absolutely no excuse for two subs with the same service not having a first in, first out.
No matter how big or varied the sub may be, nothing else should be graded until that sub is completed.

FIFO does not work, unless all subs are at the
    same service level.

FIFO does not work, if certain employees are
designated as primary-experts in certain cats
of cards. If the PE is absent, his batch of subs
will be slowed down even if a substitute grader
    works them.

FIFO does not work, if some subs encounter a
"problem" as they move forward. Items that
    require additional opinions/research cannot
move at the same speed as no-prob subs do.

I think Bill is saying FIFO for each service level...and frankly there there isn't a good reason why that should not be the case.

Let me qualify that by saying that if all cards are graded equally by the standards set forth in the grading guidelines, there should be no reason why one card should need an expert and another card, a different expert.

That's what I meant. Obvioulsy if someone pays for 5 or 15 day turnaround, their order should have more priorty than my 45 day turnaround.

Here is an example of my complaint. Rec'd on 7/24, grades pop yesterday. Very similar looking sub to the stuff I send in and I have 2 similar subs that were received prior to this one being received.

Maybe, each expert's knowledge/experience is EQUAL on all cards.
Maybe not; and, if "not," I want the most qualified/comfortable
    grader working on my sub.

I am trying to think of some service businesses that operate on
a (edit add: "strict") FIFO scheme.

I am having trouble making a list.

Every other business in the world used a FIFO approach.

How would you like to go out to dinner and have to take a number. Then they decide to just pick a number out of a hat to see who gets to eat next?

  • Storm, I have to politely disagree with you on this one. Similar cards on the same service level should always be on a FIFO approach. I also don't see why a grader that grades modern chrome baseball cards can't grade a 1980 football card.

Does this mean my 86-87 Fleer Wayman Tisdale has cancer?

Before I completely derail this thread, it sucks when they pass your order over, but I guess I can understand PSA's reasoning. All we need is the grader of death and Mr. EOT grading even more cards.

Sims on the same svc-lvl should "ordinarily" be FIFO.
If there is a "problem/question," FIFO has to be tossed
OR the line would shut down.

    .......

I do NOT know that PSA has different "experts" in
vintage/modern. I hope they do. But, it does seem reasonable
that a grader who knows the ins/outs of 80s FB should also
know the ins/outs of 80s BB.

This is a fair analysis of why FIFO is NOT the most efficient
    queuing scheme in all circumstances.

Some of the principles can be applied to the OP's question.

    Queuing

    ......

Also, see "queuing theory" on goog.

I guess it is important to note that there is a
    large difference between

    First Come First Served

    and

    First In First Out

    .....

The PSA scheme is largely geared to FCFS, but there seems
little way that FIFO can be the result of FCFS on 100% of subs.

  • Storm, I fail to see how your example and especially Nick's example have anything remotely to do with card grading.

If they were identical subs, for snorts and giggles, let's say 2 submitters both submit five 82 Topps Ripken rookies on the same service level but are received 2 days apart. Shouldn't the one that got there first be the first sub graded? Of course it should but it doesn't work that way.

I have no idea why my comment got edited because it was a comical poke at the idea of FIFO, and was actually on PSA's side. Maybe he/she/they just didn't get it.

It is likely better to say that it "does not always work that way."

It does work that way, often. Maybe, "usually." (I don't know that
    for certain.)

I just don't see a way to make it work that way "always."

All I actually want is an EXPLANATION of why this happens. I'm very curious how their system moves one of my orders thru in a month and another nearly identical order takes just 3 days.
Do they load some graders down with stacks of orders, while other graders are given far fewer? Are some graders a lot slower than others?

The usual reply is "It says 45 business days so anything earlier, you are lucky". That's true, I guess
but as a regular, loyal customer, it's also my right to be curious.

I am very happy w/ PSA and their grading of my cards but this is one part of their business that has me very confused.

"...this is one part of their business that has me very confused. ."

    /////////////////

I suspect that any worthwhile "explanation" would have to be sub-specific.

If the rotation is caused by different circumstances, there is NOT a generic explanation.

I don't mind waiting. 99% of what I submit is just for my collection anyway.

"I don't mind waiting. 99% of what I submit is just for my collection anyway."

    ////////////

I guess some high-volume submitters prolly tell PSA
that the subs are needed back ASAP, in order to meet
    show/listing/delivery deadlines.

If such is the case, it is not unreasonable to assume
that the largest customers might get bumped ahead
a little bit. That is pretty much how any biznez would
    handle the request.

I can't change my Signature anymore because of the "Penny".

If I click on the "Profile" button my avatar gets switched to "2345" (Penny) automatically, if I save my profile I get the avatar "Penny". The kicker is that whatever avatar I was using is now GONE. I can switch from the Penny, buy whatever avatar I was using is no longer on the available list.
That's why I haven't changed my Sig. line in a long time. I think it has something to do with Chrome.

The Robin Ventura/Nolan Ryan fight is one of the all time greats.

But youtube the video. Afterwards, ask yourself why Ozzie Guillen talks so tough all the time. He's part of that fight, and I've never seen a major leaguer act like such a girl. You get two seconds of him dancing around hoping to NOT find someone to hit. Hilarious.
