Patrick, Please don't take this the wrong way, but I just don't understand why you would need to have the set in PSA 9-10. Assuming PSA was dead on accurate 100% of the time, would you really need only the most perfect cards in order to enjoy your collection? Taking into account that they aren't that accurate and often there is no difference between an 8 and a 9 or a 9 and a 10, at that point you're not really even collecting Bossy cards, you're collecting manufactured "rare" slabs that happen to have cards inside.
Obviously you're a Bossy fan and his cards mean a lot to you. Why not just build a nice looking raw Bossy collection at 5% of the cost? You're dad is correct in a way- PSA will one day go out of business and PSA slabs will be worthless. Either another grading company will take over or card grading (the way we recognize it today) will become obsolete. Either way, your PSA 10 Bossy set will be worth only what the cards (and not the slabs) will be worth. The 50 cent cards you've been paying $10-$50 for will go back to being 50 cent cards.
I guess what I'm saying is enjoy the cards, not the slabs. It's a lot cheaper, smarter and more fun.
There may have been a slight misunderstanding with the PSA GEM MINT GPA reference...Actually what I meant was my college GPA is 4.0 and I would like to maintain that all throughout graduate school...I was just being, cute I guess, by saying that my college gpa is GEM MINT, lol.
I agree with you that building raw is fun, and I do think I will continue Bossy's set that way...it is easier to display in an album and put away on a book shelf, easier to "let go" for awhile and come back to collecting later without missing out on the only PSA 10 that shows up on the market.
CDsNuts is right on about just collecting raw cards for your personal enjoyment and not get caught in the registry mindset. You can also do lower grade cards, such as 7-8s.
It seems like you really enjoy this hobby so do it for the fun of it. Good luck with your studies. You can always come back later.
Patrick, Its tough to argue with your logic, but I think your one day going to regret parting with the set you have worked so long and hard to acquire. If your not desperate for the money, why not just pack it up for a while and come back to it when your hearts back into it? Good Luck on Grad school!
I think it's a great idea to sell. I find when I sell stuff I rarely regret it. Plus, like most of us collectors you probably have a touch of OCD so it's good to force yourself to do something like this. Good luck.
You'll be better off when you get rid of them. At the end of the day, they're just cards. What function do they have? I know you put time into it, but you had time to admire them, and now hopefully you can make your money back and then some.
I sure understand your POV with respect to the importance of attending school without distractions.
I have a degree in dentistry - competition required I take college very seriously - then school at Columbia was pure work - I occasionally bought a pack of cards and that's about it.
Good luck with graduate school - perhaps during breaks you can spend a little time on the hobby?
So - take care of school and the hobby will take care of itself - if ya know what I mean?
Congratulations on keeping a 4.0 GPA, that is not an easy thing to do!
The best advise I can give, forget about anything else and give 100% of your focus to school, period...
If you don't need the money really badly for school or other things, the just pack your cards up real nice, like another board member meantioned, and just forget about them, let the box collect dust. I think once your finished with school and making all that cash, you'll definetly regret ever selling your cards, but in the other hand you would have 10 times the money to buy them all back and some. If selling them would make your school life easier, than don't think twice about it and sell everything, but if your not hurting for money, then just pack those bad boys up and focus on school.
There is nothing more important than focusing on school and finishing it the right way...
Good luck to you and I hope you finish everything to put your mind to, with a perfect 4.0!
If you are selling your cards and want some action here I would start scanning and open up your set for viewing? I just started selling again on Ebay and it kind of got expensive fee wise. I would definitly contact the other 2 Bossy set collectors and offer them stuff.
<< <i>For the past five years I have been collecting Mike Bossy's master set and after thinking about it heavily over the past year, decided last week, after a long talk with my father (who has always been interested in the set, not to buy but just interested) to go ahead and dismantle it.
A couple months ago the PSA set registry department said a few sticker cards would be allowed and then when I went to add them, after spending lots of money on grading fees and obtaining the cards, they went back on what they told me. At the time I was upset and thinking about getting rid of the set then. I am not getting rid of the set for this reason, but if I seriously considered it then, over something like that, then maybe my heart just is not in the hobby as much as it used to be.
When I began the master set I owned my own home and had a full time job. Now I am bouncing from college to college, from Richmond VA to New York NY, to Charlottesville VA and now back to Richmond...toting the set around, maintaining it, and searching for raw cards worthy of upgrade, or even graded upgrades has become too time and money consuming, at least for a college student trying to maintain a PSA GEM MINT GPA
Recently, this summer, my parents bought a new house and I have been helping them move from their old one to the new. I had no idea how many cards I had, but when I was throwing them away in the thousands I began thinking to myself, "Now what if something happened to you Patrick? What if you needed to just get rid of all of your Bossy cards like this? Could one day they end up in the garbage too?"
So my dad said, and I have to agree with him, the best thing to do is not to even store them in a box somewhere, because then I would still be spending study time looking up cards, but to instead just get rid of them and get out of the hobby, at least for now.
Another thing, I am an English major and love writing and literature. I enjoy collecting old books that have touched me in one way or another. I love the fact that there is no such thing as a registry to compete with others in getting the best grade of a good old book. When the competition aspect comes in a lot of the fun and sentimental reasons for collecting go right out the window. I get the book because I enjoy it and not for anything else. With that mindset I may still collect some raw.
So, I know there are not a lot of Bossy collectors out there but if you are looking for some of his cards within a set, I will be posting them on eBay as of all last week and the next two weeks to come (not spam, just saying)
