1959 Topps Football - (SCAN-HEAVY) - Grades Popped - Listed on BST Forum

First, I'll try to give you the Reader's Digest version on how I came across these cards. A friend on my softball team (in his mid-30s) heard that I was into collecting sports cards (because I was talking about The National), and after a game earlier this week he told me that he used to collect cards when he was a kid and wondered if I would like to come over and check them out, and maybe help him sell them. He said they're mostly football, and he has a set that he thinks is from the 50s. Now we've all heard this one before, they say they have all of these cool cards but when you get there he's got stacks of late 80s cards worth doggy doo-doo. But I figured what the heck, he's a good friend, so I'd be happy come check out what he has, because I love looking at any cards, no matter what they are.

Well I get there and his entire kitchen table is full of old binders and boxes. Now while he has his fair share of 1986 through 1989 Topps Baseball junk, he also has full and partial sets of Football ranging from 1975 to 1987, all kept in binders! He's got all the big football rookies you can think of, from Bradshaw, Payton, Montana, Elway, Marino, Rice, along with random cards from the 60s like a 1969 Topps Piccolo and Sayers, to a 1962 Ernie Davis! On top of ALL THAT, he has an entire Series 1 set (1 - 88) of 1959 Topps Football, that is freaking beautiful. All kept in sheets in a binder, untouched since probably the early to mid 80s if I had to guess. These '59s are just stunning, the surfaces are clean, and corners are as sharp as you could ever hope for 50-year-old cards.

Now for the actual questions about this set. I've noticed on some of these cards that the yellow is not layered properly on top of the other colors. For cards this old, how much does PSA take this into consideration, and will it drop a grade or two because of it? Also, how much does 60/40 or 70/30 centering hurt the grades in these cards? Here are nine of the higher-rated cards from this set. Please let me know what you think, and thank you for your help!

    WOW are those something!

    very nice cards.
I dont think the yellow being off will hurt you. I see a lot of 8s on the centered cards, and maybe7s on the OC card. or 7-8 OC. something like that. nice cards. sell me some!

here are the ones I need:
    1 9 10 17 20 23 36 40 51 53 60 68 75 76 82 84 86 130 135 144 148 155

Thanks guys! He has the first 88 cards of this set, minus numbers 2 and 11 for some reason. Out of the 86 cards, I only deemed five cards not gradable because they had a slight dent on the edge from being kept in a binder. The rest are smooth and sharp, especially that Bart Starr!!

In order to raise some money to use as grading fees, I'm selling (or sold) some of his factory sets and lower grade rookies. By the time I'm done with that I should have about $450 to put towards the grading fees. That should just about cover the rest of these '59s, plus a hand full of other minty cards like the Payton, Theisman, and Rice RCs.

In my humble opinion, the grades I expect to see from the '59s are some 6s, mostly 7s, a few 8s, and I HOPE a 9 or two. I have submitted a couple dozen 1952 Topps Baseball cards in my experience, and have received a few 7s that were in worse shape than most of these cards, so I guess we'll see.

If anyone else has experience grading cards like this, I would love to hear your opinion! Thanks!

I asked for NQs, so any of these 5s 6s and 7s had to do more with centering than anything else. The corners and surfaces on these cards are insanely awesome for being 50-year-old cards.

These cards all belong to a friend of mine, and I promised him they would be all sold on ebay, to give everyone a fair shot at them. Once I post them, I will mention it in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.

Nice find of 59's. It's funny, I didn't notice the date of the thread at the top, but I started grading the cards posted in my head as I looked thru the scans and I got them all right on w/psa, except for the Art Donovan, which I thought might be a 7 due to the slight print and top right corner touch.

Beautiful cards! The colors just pop.

I'm working on this set. I need a few from your results, so I'll
be sure to bid on them when you get them listed on ebay.

I hope you do well with them for your friend.

    That Bart Starr looks sweet!

Thanks all!! I just knew that Bart Starr would score big... it was the prettiest card in the bunch!

It seems like it typically takes my cards about a week and a half to travel from PSA-poppage to NE Ohio, so once I receive them, I'll have them scanned and listed a couple days after that. I'll bump this thread and also post it in the BST.
  • Nice, I've been playing softball for 18 yrs. and never had a teammate with any good cards. LOL Congrats!
