Would you buy a high profile card with pinhole?

Would you buy a high profile card with a pinhole or two in it? Let's say the card would grade a 3-4 otherwise.

If it was for personal collection and had nice eye appeal.

Curious to your thoughts...

Never owned a pinholed card...so I wouldnt know how I'd react to having it in my collection.

I would love to find a 52 Topps Mantle with a minor pinhole- maybe right in the black line. Makes some high profile cards affordable whereas I would never be able to own an example with such eye appeal. I actually have an 84-85 Star Jordan with a pinhole haha.

NOT if I EVER planned to sell it and get my money back.

It will always have holes in it.

    ........

Exception would be IF I could get it SUPER cheap and dump it the next day.

You're telling me that you couldnt get your money back on a 1952 mantle with pinholes? Or a T206 Cobb?

What if you get it for the "low" VCP price compared to the other 1's where you cant make out the picture from all the creases...

  • Would I?

    I own several already!

I love cards that aren't exactly "investor" quality. It fits very nicely within my budget. First of all, I prefer holes in my cards to holes in my binders. Secondly, I can always upgrade later.

Is that what you told your wife on your honeymoon night right before you told her she might feel a little pri(k?

A problem card will always be a problem card.
To hold any value, it must rely on a continuous
stream of folks who will settle for fillers.

A problem free card - if well protected - should
have a much wider market in out years.

The current market largely turns its nose up at
most 9 (OC) cards. That gives me little confidence
in the out-year value of cards with holes in them.

The best thing about pinholes is the way they devalue a card.

I would take a pinhole over a through the middle crease anyday.

I passed up a PSA 1 1952 Mantle with a pinhole a few years back and always regretted it. Dead centered with nice registration and 5-ish corners - sold for $4,000. Pinhole was pretty close to the black border like Allen described.

Depends on the card, Cobbs, Wagners, Mantle, Turkey reds etc.

    Also depends on the price.

For a really rare card, give me a PSA 1 with a pinhole all day long (if priced right). A pinhole turning a card automatically into a PSA 1 is ridiculous.

high profile card typically means mass produced. If it is mass produced, I'd probably lean away from a pinhole example, unless budget is a serious consideration. [think T206 Green Ty Cobb PSA 7 value versus PSA 1 pinhole]. Otherwise, I'm generally in the same camp as Bob.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I vote "no." I would never knowingly buy a card with a pinhole. All the cards that I buy are strictly for my personal collection...there is never any intent to re-sell. I couldn't be satisfied knowing one of my cards had a hole in it, no matter how special the card.

i would only chose to own a pinhole card if i could also go back in time to b*tchslap the little kid who did it......of course, that little kid might be me. image

It's nice cause ya could pin the card up on your wall board and just use the same pinhole, and it wouldn't add extra damage to the card.
  • akuracy503akuracy503 Posts: 1,923 ✭✭✭
Very interesting census so far, we are split down the middle with both sides making a strong case.

This tells me that a decent portion of the market will find value in pinholed cards....it's all about value.

you'd think.....i tried that and wasted a perfectly nice Aaron rookie by jamming a 5/8" drill bit through the screw down. imageimage

If I could get a nice looking Cobb in a T3 with a pinhole such that I picked it up for PSA 1 price?

    Fer sure!!

    Otherwise, I'd pass.

As long as it was a card I could not normally afford and the pinhole was in a spot where it did not detract badly from the overall eye appeal, I would buy it.

Pin Hole. There is always a market for nice looking cards. But Storm is correct a card with a "problem" will always be harder to sale.

Heck ya I will, I love pinholes!

For the price & eye appeal a pinhole is the best "lower grade damaged card" you can find.

Id take a couple pinholes in border
    over....
    heavy creases
    back paper pulls
    writing within photo
    trimming
    clipped corners
    miscut
    tape
    glue
    etc.

I can't tell - does that card have a pinhole?

And, was it priced like a PSA 1?

Not everyone can afford a PSA 6 or 7 Mantle like that, so if the price is right? Why not?

    Resale?

Most of the people here are like me - plain ole collectors - on a budget - tryin to have fun.

Certain cards are always worth the pinhole - again - if priced right.

I bought a whitey ford rookie with a pinhole for my father in law for $40-50 or so on ebay a year or 2 ago. He was thrilled with it, it looks like a nice card and cost almost nothing.

I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a pinhole unless I couldn't find another one, but for a cheap setfiller it's ok with me.

I'm actually a bit surprised to read most of the responses on this thread. For me, collecting cards is about building something "special." With a fixed budget, I'd much rather have 1 flawless example of a card than 10 cards with pinholes that I'd always view as fillers. I guess it gets down to what your motivation is, quality or quantity. Both have their advantages/disadvantages.

Yeah I agree that you take that into account. If I have the budget to buy a solid PSA 4 Mantle 52T, then yeah I would just buy that. The Whitey Ford is a good example, I don't have a Ford rookie, if had lots of extra card money I would pick up a PSA 7 on a whim at a big show, but if I saw a good lookin one with a pinhole I would pick it up for cheap just to have it. Not too concerned about its increase in value so much as just having a 50's HOFer rookie card. Should I decide to move it later down the road I could just list it on ebay and let it roll, heck ya can't lose much.
  • For me, I have 7 t3s, four with pinholes, dont detract much as far as I am concerned, would be in 3-4 range without, but paid a lot less, however I do not have any others in sets I am working on, and probably would not, I think this set is only exception, partly due to size of cards.

F**k yeh my collection would be empty without them
  • Short answer, yes.

And if anyone has a good looking Ty Cobb T3 or Shoeless Joe Cracker Jack with a pinhole they want to sell on the cheap, I'm your guy.

    Heck yeah...

If anyone has a 54/55 Topps Howe with a pinhole, let me know!

Or a Delvecchio, or Sawchuk, or Lindsay, or Kelly....
