How much would you guys pay for a 1980-81 Topps Basketball Wax Box graded GAI 8.5?

Just trying to get an idea as I might make an offer for one that a local guy has. The last one on ebay sold for $820 and it wasn't graded although sometimes GAI may be worse than not graded at all. Thoughts?

If Steve Hart has a box, I would buy it from him.

BBCE's buy price is $700, so at least that much.

I would say around $800 would be a good buy price, $700ish would be a steal, but I wouldn't pay more than $900 fot it. There are 176 cards to the set. A box is 36 packs w/ 8 cards per pack. 288 cards per box, a good investment or lottery ticket?? A PSA 9 bird/magic sells for $800ish, a PSA 10 will bring thousands (7-8+)

I am willing to pay ~$1k for legit boxes. GAI graded doesn't equate to legit unfortunately unless it is from a sealed case. I used to have really good luck buying ungraded 80/81 Topps basketball boxes off of ebay but with all the resealed junk out there now I don't even bother anymore. The last couple of boxes I purchased came from BBCE.
You normally get 1-3 Bird/Magic rookies per box though some boxes have no Bird/Magic rookies. PSA 8 B/M rookies only sell for ~$200 so opening a box is quite a gamble, most of the other cards in the set are worthless with the majority of PSA 10s in the set selling for under $50.
If I were to gamble on a GAI box I wouldn't pay more than $850 unless it had the sealed case designation on the label.

thanks for the info. My next question was gonna be how many Bird/Magic's could I expect. I think that the label does say from a sealed case but Im not sure. I'm going to check it out this weekend and will probably make an offer.
  • Why would you even consider a GAI box if the price goes over $700 if you can get one from BBCE for that price? We busted a box twice in BBCE group rips last year and the cards were nice. I think the last one we did had 2 Bird/MAgic rookies.

Might have better luck buying nice 9's and re-subbing. You want a nice Bird/Magic, not a bunch of EXMT 1980 BKB commons, right? For $1000, you can pick up several choice 9's and see what happens.

yeah, but how much fun is that?
  • yeah, i guess that is true. it would be funner to open the packs up and find a bird/erving/magic. but know that that RC is hard to get in PSA 9, much less PSA 10, because of the centering even if the corners are perfect. it is more likely you would find a PSA 7 or maybe luckily an 8. other that that card, the other Bird and Magic RCs would go for anywhere from $25-$75 in PSA 9 or 10. but just the thrill of finding that big RC and if it is good enough to get you a PSA 9, it will pay for the box itself if you choose to sell it.
