Fake 1905 shilling on ebay - UPDATE

I have to give the posters on predecimal.com all of the credit for finding this and doing all of the research. I'm just passing this on - and my only contribution is a photo of my own example.

It is well known that 1905 halfcrowns are forged on a routine basis. Less known is that this is also true for the 1905 shilling. This auction is a classic example.

Check out the retooling. It's a nice job, I'll give the forger that. Without a real example to compare it to, many will be fooled (I know I might have been).

  • Scary.

  • Definately very deceptive, even comparing the two there isn't that much difference between them, the top of the 5 seems shorter on the fake, and the curved part not quite as curved. True, I wouldn't have spotted it.

    A very fake 1905 shilling

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • The surfaces look a little "ungenuine" - too crisp with an "antiqued" look. Nothing that a little pocket wear wouldn't fix.

How many others are out there?
  • It's the first one I've come across. If you compare the 5 it's a little bit higher as well. Must be worth something as an altered date.
  • 210.70GBP with 2hrs to go.

    Someone's going to be miffed.

A post on predecimal indicated that it had been sold previously for £370 and was returned. Now it's for sale again and is claimed as genuine once again. The seller has been contacted by a number of folks, including the original buyer! But there are still no changes in the listing.

Thats good news. Hopefully the seller won't try selling it again.
