On the Way to the National--Group Rip !!

OK--so this is a good place to start the National Group Rip list.

I suggest meeting on Friday -- perhaps just after PSA's luncheon. Maybe 2:30? At Steve's Booth?

Who is in....what are we gonna rip?

Manny

well after kicking it around for 2 months I finally decided to go. Need some alone time and what better place than at the National....OK, I could think of several better places, but this is a card site. Been wanting to go for years! Really looking forward to seeing Steve Hart's unopened treasures and maybe hooking up with a few of you guys.

Staying at the Mariott. Will be bringing my laptop, so anyone that wants to hook up for a cold one or maybe smoke a fat one..post here and we can make it happen.

Sweet! I thought you were going to drive it! Meh, it's easier to drink on the plane! image

I've been to the IX Center several times for random Auto Shows and other things, but never for a card show! I'm having a hard time picturing that place full of tables! This will also be my first National. I'm ready to have my mind blown (and wallet)!

Manny, have a great time. Please take lots of photos of Steve's table and any other cool unopened stuff. John

They have a merry-go-round in the middle of the IX Center, so it should be easy to take some aerial photos of the place too. image

Have a great time. I've been to the two in Atlanta. I understand that the dealers did not like them, but I had a blast. There was not nearly enough time to see everything.

    Good luck Manny!

First one for me was in 1992 in Atlanta.

It was way larger than anything I'd ever seen! Something like 1000 tables!

I kept track of the booths I wanted to go back to with a small pad - took a small tote bag to handle the crap and stuff I might buy - wore comfortable shoes - did alot of walking!!!

I found it took one day just to make one swing around the place and catalog the returns on the next day.

On day one - I had a list of guys to run to first since I found that they sold out on the stuff I wanted from SCD ads really fast - then I just started from the beginning.

No time to eat or drink - too much to cover, too much to see, too much to buy unless ya got a zillion bucks! What a great place to go!!!!!

Wish they'd have another one in the SE. Atlanta would be better than Chicago or Cleveland for me.

    Stone--

thanks for the tip on how to handle it.

I figure on the Baseball Card Exchange 1st...after sufficient drooling I'll move on (don't take this the wrong way Steve--but I had a dream about you at the National the other nite--yikes!!!). Maybe buy a pack and rip it right there.

Don't really care about the autographs (do not want to waste time!)....

    What to do next?

    Any other tips from pros?

    organizing the National Group Rip

    Friday...Steve's Booth 2:30?

    What do ya wanna rip??!!

    Manny

I can't make it to this particular rip because I work until 5:00pm, and I wouldn't be able to make it up there until around 6:00pm on Friday. We should set one up at the same time each day, that way everyone attending would be able to make at least one rip. I wish I could join you on this one!

someone mentioned a merry go round in the IX center....can't vouch for that but can tell you they have a ferris wheel there. Also for those that would like to partake they do sell beer at the IX center......I've been there several times for the National and they have it set up pretty good.....lot's of tables but it is organized to the degree that it can be. Everyone who is going have fun, I'll probably be there on Thursday and maybe Friday. al.

Does the IX Center have wireless internet?

Yeah, I meant to say ferris wheel... I'm a moron, lol

jeffcbay: don't worry, after a few beers merry go rounds, ferris wheels, they all look the same to me also.....hey are you from around the area??? just curious, I'm from out Parma way. In fact I'm not far from Big Daddy Bowman al.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
Yeah, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking there... lol

I'm from the Canton/Massillon area, about 3 minutes from the HOF.

Since I work until 5pm, and the National only runs until 6pm, I won't be able to make it to the show until the weekend, and most likely only Sunday. If anyone is planning on going to the Tribe game that weekend, I would love to meet up!

I'll do the Friday rip...anything football (within $ reason)

Canton/Massillon area, I probably have seen you at the show down in Canton at the Beldon Village Mall, I used to set up at the Holiday Inn until about two years ago. I was there every month until my kids started to get older and I had to stop doing the show due to other, i.e. their prioritiesimage
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
I have gone to the show in the BV Mall once or twice, but never with much success. Only picked up a box or two. My Brother and I used to set up at the Holiday Inn too, but that was about 10 years ago. I do stop in at that shows at the Marriott (still run by Jane Bosley). I never have a difficult time spending some money there! image
  • I will be in the Canton, Ohio area around lunchtime on Wed, July 29. Anyone have recommendations for a good asian/Chinese buffet ? Then it's on to downtown Cleveland for the nightlife. Oh hell yeah !!!
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
The best one around here (in my opinion) is the Ichiban Japanese Buffet. It can be a little pricey, but they have a hibachi grill, and some GREAT food! There is another great Chinese buffet next to Buffalo Wild Wings called Buffet Dynasty. If you're looking for a non-buffet experience, there is Wasabi Japanese Steak House that has great hibachi and sushi. They're a little more up-scale. If you drive around the Belden Village (North Canton) area, you're come across several random Chinese Buffets.

Yeah, I remember Jane, great lady. Don't know if you know it or not but her husband died a few years back...really sad. My understanding is she's still running the shows over at what I think is now a Sheraton. I usually stop down a few times each year to say hey but haven't been down there yet this summer. I used to set up at the Holiday Inn. When you'd walk in the door and take a left I'd be first table straight ahead. I usually had my son and/or daughter with me.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
I think the Marriott used to be the Sheraton, same building. I actually didn't know about her husband passing. That is sad...
  • Jeffcbay,

Thanks SO MUCH for those buffet recommendations !!!!
