Bob Gibson from mid June to mid August 1968 was the best there ever was. No one will ever dominate the game single-handledly for such a period of time again. He was, in a word, un-hittable.

Gibson in '68? If we're talking about dominating pitching, how about Hershiser for all of '88?

  • If we are talking at their peak, say their best ten years...then it is Mickey Mantle hands down.

If one then accounts for the era they played in, the level of competition etc..., then Mantle may even be the best ever, yes better than Ruth and the 'easier' era he played in.

Most likely it is an illusion why the 'best' players of all time are always coming from the pre war era...an illusion created by the circumstances in which they played in.
