61 Set

The 61 set has always been my favorite. I have noticed that it has no truly low pop cards in PSA 8. The lowest is 40 (306), and there is only one other card below 50 (Houk is at 49). On the registry the first 20 sets are complete with a rating of 8.00 of higher. Is the large number of graded cards due to a high print run, or the overall popularity of the set? Are the print numbers available for the various years?

It's not a favorite of mine in total, but I love certain '61 cards (Maris, Yaz, F Robby, some of the All Stars, etc.) I've wondered the same thing.

I love the 61 set. I have a few autographs and will eventually put together a raw set. Can't afford the graded yet. But one day....one day!

    Hi Mark,

Probably THE Most popular set of the 60's.

Thanks for the link. At one tme VCP had my set (a handful of 9s, the rest 8s except for a PSA 7 Cerv) set at around $30,000. I received the .5 bump on the Mantle A.S., Maris A.S., and Gentile, and now it is around $20,000. There is no price comparison for the Gentile.

People still think the Gibbon is a 1K card just ask Kyle from Kyle's Cards.

Personally I like the 61T set - great year for baseball!

Here's one of my favorite 61s and in an older flip - definitely worthy of the bump IMO.

I could never budget enough to do a graded set of that size in any grade - but Mark - if ya decide to do the set? I wish ya the best!

    Good luck

I built a nice '61 set that had a Mantle 7, Clemente 7, Mays 6, Yaz 8, Mantle AS 6, F. Robinson 8(oc), McCovey 8(oc), B. Williams 7, Mathews 7(oc), Yankees team 7, Mantle Blasts 7, WS 2 Mantle 7, Aaron AS 7, Kaline AS 7, Mantle MVP 6, Sheldon 7, and several other high number 8's. It had 192 graded cards. The only problem it had was that around 20 or so cards had qualifiers. This was the first vintage set I did and I didn't realize how much qualifiers killed the set. It would have been better to get two grades lower with no qualifiers. Anyway, I spent about $3200 on the set and sold it for $4000, but I think I could have gotten $1000 more had I known then what I know now. Great set. I'll always remember it and its specifics because it's the first thing I tackled when I got back into the hobby after a long hiatus.

Not if they were net graded down. If they were simply 2 grades lower and true to the grade then yes I agree.

    Good for you.

I had a 61 raw set about 90% done and sold it off.
I wish I didn't so I have just started to rebuild my set. I like the 61 set alot.
But the centering is a killer.
