I'm in agreement that opening packs in hopes of pulling auto's is a crapshoot and statistically not a good idea.
Better to just check ebay for a certain year where the set was loaded with autos - like the Topps fanfavorites e.g.

edit: in 2005, I opened an entire case of Topps Heritage and pulled zero autos! I was doing the set - just wanted to exemplify my belief on pulling autos as a goal.
