Baseball Cards in the movie "Pride of the Yankees"

I recently saw Pride of the Yankees for the first time. Of course, for those that don't know, it is the story of Lou Gehrig. I noticed that the young Lou Gehrig carried around some pretty good baseball cards in his pocket. He says that has some Sweet Caporal baseball cards, including Hans Wagner, plus a bunch more. They don't actually show the Wagner, but they do show a baseball card of Babe Ruth. My question is - what Babe Ruth card are they showing? Is that his rookie card?

If you haven't seen the movie, start watching this youtube clip from 3:00 on to get what is going on. Then, at 3:22, it show his Babe Ruth card. If it doesn't have creases, it looks to be about EX condition. Which card is it? It features him with the Red Sox.

    I should have done that.

Now, what card is it? Is that his rookie card from 1916?

I like how the ball was shot from one of those ball shooters(don't know the technical name)when little Lou "hit it" image
  • Nope, not his Sporting News rookie card. Wonder if they just "made up" a card for the movie? I've never seen that one before.
  • Definitely one of my favorite sports movies. I was even considering buying one of these:
    Lou Gehrig

Has anyone seen "Diminished Capacity": IMDB Link

That's not any known Ruth card; probably a movie prop. Similar to the T206 style cards of Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly from "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" that were sold in an auction (Leland's?) some years back.

Not to hijack the thread, but I was watching Born on the 4th of July a while back an noticed that in Tom Cruise's bedroom when he was in High School had some 54 Topps baseball cards tacked to his wall. The problem with them is that they had the white boarder on all four sides!!

Follow up the movie with the book Luckiest Man
Very good read --- does a great job in breaking down his entire life and also has a bunch of personal letters that Lou wrote

Not to hijack too, but I was just watching Major League and noticed that Sirano (Spelling??) has tacked in his locker a 54 Topps Hank Aaron. Take a look if you have the movie. Its the scene where he has to wake up his bat before the home opener.

FYI - that guy is the same actor that played President David Palmer in 24.

Even if that Ruth card was a movie prop item, and slipped out the door, wouldn't it be worth
some good coinage? Obviously, it would be a very rare item. Cool card regardless.

I was thinking about the "prop" collectability of the card Bryan.

I would be proud to have some props from a movie like that - I remember back in the 90s - the uni from the movie came up for auction - for a hi end collector, I can't think of anything cooler than to have the movie prop uni as a companion to a real GU uni of Gehrig.

Thanx for sharing Shane - it's one of my favorite movies.
