1980 WBTV signed set hits the auction block

Some of you will remember an interview I did with a guy who had some of the WBTV cards signed the night they were given away in Charlotte. This lot of signed cards included the Ripken. Recently he got with me letting me know that he was going to sell the cards.

The last time a certified lot of the cards sold they went for a little over $1,800.

    He won't see $1,800.

The ripken auto is pretty weak. Whoever has the one here, it is much prettier.

That sure is a case for signed cards being slabbed "authentic" instead of getting a number grade.

I agree with jim on that count also.

I agree that the other signed WBTV set was stunning. If my memory is right it was signed in Nashville when Charlotte was in town back in the day. Originally sold for a little over $700 it dropped over $1,800 after being authenticated. I will admit that I would love having a set signed the night the cards were given out but not a $1,800 kind of love.

Worth noting that with just under 3 days remaining someone has placed the opening bid of $1,800.

Me either, but I'd sure love to have it. Too rich for me though right now.

As much as I'd love having it the opening bid wasn't placed by me.

I am starting to regret not buying the unauthenticated signed lot for $700 though.
  • Ripkenintheminors,

Isn't it weird how theres no J for junior on his card and on mine there is.

  • What kind of PSA holder is this? What are those grooves on the front of the holder bottom right and left edges?

And the back of the holder seems like it has plastic hinges on the bottom and top with some sort of engravement of letters.

I emailed the seller with all these ???s the first time he listed this card 2 weeks ago now he relisted it LINK

Rest of the set looks well handled, but the Ripken got an 8. He must have put the Ripken aside knowing he was going to be a star and threw the rest of the set in a drawer somewhere.

I was curious as why this auction was relisted as it did get bidders and finish the last time it was listed.
  • yes it had 1 bidder at 1500 and I emailed the seller that day when it ended and I asked him if the high bidder dont pay I will take it. he never responded.

Was surprised to see this card relisted as well. Did the seller say why it was posted again?

Wonder if it was a shill or a no pay.

I am admittedly not an expert on Cal's sigs so I can't really comment.

On another note let me reiterate my disappointment with Beckett continuing to call it the W3TV set. I am pretty sure in my interview with Beckett they listed it as W3TV despite my request for them to call it WBTV. I have forwarded them more than enough information to confirm that it is WBTV but they still refer to it as W3TV. Doesn't help their credibility on the subject.

Yea that kind of bugs me to when I see that 3 instead of a B. I even called them to switch my label they said I was wrong thats its a 3 so I just hung up.

When I was in the midst of conversations with the folks at Beckett I brought this up more than once. After my interview ran I kinda called to gripe about the fact that they called it the W3TV and how it defeats the purpose of what I'm trying to do with the site. I was told that someone there had researched things and was 100% sure that it was a W3TV card and not WBTV. I can only assume that it is someone so high up on the ladder that nobody wants to tell them that they are wrong. Yes the channel is 3 but considering the fact that the program announcing the set calls it the WBTV set should be enough evidence.
