It was originally aired - I think - in about 1959.

Groucho talks to Baylor about how Elgin got his name.

He was named for his father's watch.

The Elgin watch company was an early sponsor of You Bet Your Life.

I cannot find the clip on youtube, but I am pretty sure it's there.
Just too many to watch them all.

As a child and even today, my favorite pinup artist was Gil Elvgren...always reminded me of Elgin...and the OCD hobbyist in my young mind would buy broken Elgin watches at the flea markets I'd also purchase cards at. I was a strange kid.

Elgin Baylor is probably the most underated HOFer that ever lived. In his playing days he was virtually unstopable when he went to the basket. He had outrageous hang time and was next to Chamberlain the strongest man in the league. Long before Erving.Jordan and Lebron he was the high flyer of the league. Nowdays sadly he is much overlooked when it comes to all time player teams but if you ask his contemporaries such as Bill Russell,Oscar Robertson and of course his long time teammate and friend Jerrry West they can attest to his skills. He was defintely the Lebron James of his era combining Speed,strength and jumping ability to score in a variety of ways. I think it is important that Basketball players today start to recognize the greatness of the vintage players in the NBA and as Baseball has done keep their oldtimers alive in the minds of the younger players and the fans.

I wonder if he signed that card while he was waiting for the Clipper lottery ball to come up. Sadly we will no longer see Elgin at the May ritual known as the Draft Lottery. I missed him this year handing a curse....I mean Clippers Jersey to the #1 pick.
