    Yes, but if recent history is a guide, a so-called "mediocre" team can get hot towards the end of the season, and perhaps not always win a World Series, but get into one or at least win a playoff series against a superior team - you see this time and time again. So for now, I'll focus on getting into the playoffs and hope the Phils have some momentum at the end of the season to again propel them to a NL pennant and hopefully another WS championship.

    Frankly, I still think the Marlins and the Braves will fade out of contention by September with the Phils and Mets going neck and neck...but ya never know for sure...long way to go yet.

    The only mediocre team I remember winning anything was the Cards and they won 105 games the year before.

    Well, it depends on the definition of "mediocre" - it's a lot tougher in MLB for a truly mediocre team to get in the playoffs versus hockey and basketball whereby some mediocre teams getting into the playoffs is the rule not the exception. Even in the NFL now, some mediocre teams sometimes get into the playoffs.

    The Marlins back in 2003 winning it in my opinion were basically a mediocre team that played over their heads.

    Houston was a mediocre team in 2005, and lost in the WS.

    The Rockies were a mediocre team in 2007, getting amazingly red hot the last few weeks of the season, and barely squeaking into the playoffs, and lost in the WS

    Tampa Bay was a young team playing over their heads last season and lost in the WS.

    There are a number of examples of better/superior teams losing in the playoffs, not even getting to the Series, losing to less talented, even sometimes "mediocre" teams - upsets happen all the time.

    maybe its that all the teams in the east can actually play ball and they are beating each other up? In the end it doesn't matter what your record is, only 4
    teams play in the playoffs and if you don't get hot then, you can go home, as the Dodgers about that in the playoffs, they came up against a far superior
    team and layed down.

    Phils are in first, right where we all expected them to be, they will be in the playoffs like we expect and then win the whole darn thing like we expect.

    Will we be passing out best regular season record trophies?

    In first place, 2 or 3 games above .500 is not much to cheer about. Phillies fans with long memories recall...what year was it? 1983? They were in first place at mid-season, barely above .500 and their manager was fired.

    Come on Steve - you know the Phillies payroll until some recent years, wasn't even close to those of the Mets and Yankees - to believe that teams whose players were stolen by other teams, that this didn't affect their chances of winning to a large degree or at least some degree...I know you know better than that.

    ...now that the playing field is at least somewhat level, the Phillies by any calculation, have been very successful in recent years.

    The Mets took the season series last yr and the difference between 135 mill and 118 or whatever it is is miniscule.

    Cmon Steve you can do better then this.


    Now it's the management that is better. lol you really are reaching.

    The difference this year is the Phillies have stayed relatively healthy while the Mets have not.

    I'd like to see what the Phillies record would be without Howard, Utley and Werth out of the lineup.

    As it is you are bragging about possibly the WORST division leader in all of baseball.

    When the 4th place team is ONLY 4 games back and the second place team has MORE wins then the leader

    that tells me the leader sucks as bad as the rest.


    Thanks for showing the payroll the Phillies have the 13th best record in baseball yet the payroll is in the top 7
