When it comes to grading you usually lose more times than you win, but not this time *Scan added*

Currently I am working on a 1972 Topps baseball registry set (about 43% complete with a GPA of 8.02), and I bought my #400 Tony Oliva in a PSA 8.5 around Christmastime for $11.27 shipped. Since then I've looked at it many times thinking that it really was an easy 9, and with 9s costing around $50, I always said that I would resub it one day and get my 9 a lot cheaper than $50. Well someday came along, and I resubbed it.

Here is how it used to look:

Then it looked like this:

Now it looks like this: GEM MINT 10...........1972 TOPPS 400 TONY OLIVA imageimage

The only downside to this story is that now it doesn't make financial sense to keep it in my set.

It definitely was a great feeling, and since it just popped today, I think it'll actually be a pop 2 once the pop report updates tomorrow.

    What will that card bring?

Honestly, I have no idea. It isnt a pop 1, but I think pop 2s still do pretty well. I just dont know the exact definition of pretty well.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm going to say it'll get you more than $11.27 shipped...

I did quick scan of VCP for 10s with pops of 1 and 2, and they have a rather large range, between $200-$900. Hope yours goes for the high end, if you sell it.

No doubt Anthony. What I will say though is that the card was never less than a 9, I saw that inside the holder, and after cracking it. In my opinion PSA got it wrong originally. After that, 9 or 10 becomes a coin flip.

  • Nick,

I disagree I would keep that card, I realize that in the end you get dollars to help finish your set, but please its a 10!! It will look good in your 72 set.

Although none have hit ebay ( according to VCP) and it could go big....Oh nevermind, just sell it!!

    Im just stunned!! CONGRATS!!!

Wow Conrats Nick! Thats a great looking card. If you sell it, I hope you get a ton for it. If you keep it, it would make an incredible addition to your set. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

    Wow Nick

Congratulations! That's a beautiful card - can't believe it went from 8.5 to 10 but what the heck - and yes - I can sure understand you wanting to sell it.

Good luck if you choose to do that - some registry dudes will want to fight over it - that's fer sure. image

That is one pretty card. Are you going to hold on to it or sell it? I think that is a good start to 72 psa 10 set image .
  • MintacularMintacular Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭
Not to be a wet blanket but that card looks no higher than the original 9 given due to centering o/c top to bottom and nice but not razor sharp corners. Consider yourself lucky and cash that baybe in...
  • bobbyw8469bobbyw8469 Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭
agree...the card was originally undergraded....now it is overgraded......SELL IT!!!!
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
It was never a 9 Pat and it is not OC top to bottom.

    Congrats Nick.

Hopefully mentioning it here will not effect the bidding for it on ebay.

If you wanted a 9 for your set, just crack it out and resubmit. You may get the 9 you are looking for.

As a follow up on this thread, I consigned the card to prewarcardcollector's monthly auction because his fees are reasonable (no worse that eBay + paypal doing it myself) and Brent has a very big following.

Personally I don't think I would have done as well selling it myself.
