Anyone ever rip some 85 topps football?

Is it even worth buying boxes of these to work on a graded set, or no? Looking at some cello boxes for around $150/pop with 672 cards a box. Figure I would break even at worst if I can get 60 (<10%) grade-worthy high pop commons split into 9's and 10's evenly - it would take less if I got anything of value of course, and I would use the 9's towards completing the set too and not sell them. Thoughts?

Anything cello has a high probability of dinged corners especially on that all black card. Might be tough to even pull 9's.

Thanks - so rackpack the way to go, or wax? Or punt completely?

I pulled this from a wax box purchased from BBCE. I had a couple other 10's and a boat load of 9's:

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Well I could handle something like that - buying a waxbox, it wouldn't take too many 10's to make it worthwhile I would think. Really hoping for a rackpack box if I can get one that makes sense cost-wise. Thanks for the input.

I've done cello and wax and was a lot happier with wax. I got a couple of boxes last year off the bay and it turned out nicely.

Sounds like a consensus on the wax - is there a cheaper place than ebay for that, then?

  • I've opened wax and racks. Probably prefer the wax, but my overall experience has been very hot/cold. I've opened 1 or 2 boxes in a row where everything was either off-center or whitish around the border.

You don't necessarily want cheaper, unless you like searched and resealed wax or humidity damaged cards. I'd recommend BBCE. I pulled some nice '85s from wax packs purchased through them.

i purchased about 8 wax boxes from bbce for $130ea or something similar last year and got crucified. Probably lost 80% of my investment on that break and grade.

I purchased a rack case for $950? or $1000 i cant remember. I opened 1 box and pulled a 10 of elway,munchak,dorsett,payton9,dent9,elway9 and probably made about $2500 profit off that one box.

i opened about 6 cello boxes- nothing exciting. probably lost 50% of investment.

I am cracking another box tomorrow for a sub so hopefully it will be like the first!

  • Never opened any racks of 85 football, but wax are definitely the way to go if you are trying to decide between cello or wax. The cleanest cello box you can find is still going to have white corners or most of the cards in each pack. Only advantage with cellos is that you can see the average centering on most cards in the pack based on the top card showing.

I purchased it from steven dickler.
He sells lots of wax from 70s and 80s.

I use to deal with him about 12yrs ago and he has been around a while and usually has clean wax. I dont think he is anywhere near as knowledgeable as steve hart as far as knowing if the product is clean or not but i have never had a problem. He is easy to deal with and fair on pricing. He also has boxes from the 70s and all the 80s football and baseball in stock and i think he does newer stuff too. I'm pretty sure he is direct with topps/ud etc.

Pm me if you want his # to get an idea of what wax he has.
I dont think he has a website or sells on ebay but he sets up at the fort washington/Reading show every year in PA which is where i got the rack case. Its actually the first 85 rack case i have ever seen that wasnt grocery and still sealed.

So curious - what percent are usually gradable (9's or 10's)? Is 5-6% (or 30 or so cards a box) aiming to high or low on average?

i've opened wax boxes with 0 gradeables. The rack box i opened about 20 minutes ago had 250 submittable cards. We will see how they turn out
