My overgraded 4SC purchase

I have bad luck buying PSA slabs with accurate grades, albeit a very small sample size. I'm now 0-fer-2. I discussed my first episode last year on this forum HERE. I lost $20 on that one. I purchased a Mint 9 1985 Donruss Nolan Ryan, my second online PSA graded card purchase, a few weeks ago from 4SC... yes, 4SC, I know. The card looked like it had potential for a crossover to BGS 9.5 to fill a customer's want list. A large scan of the card HERE. Note the black ink smear across Ryan's shoulder as well as a smaller smear above the shoulder. No way this card deserves a 9 with a flaw of this magnitude. I completely missed this defect in the scan... the eBay scan was smallish but clear. I'll probably lose at least $10 on this one. I'm done buying slabbed modern stuff from mass submission dealers. If I want my card in a slab I'll buy the raw copy and submit it myself.

Let me get this straight... You're angry because you gambled and lost?

Forget the smudge on the Ryan, did you also miss the tilt and centering? It's a weak PSA 9, but if you thought, from that scan, that it was a BGS 9.5 candidate, then I understand why you're having issues.

Now, who says YOU are entitled to make a profit on every purchase? Why is it the modern bulk submitter who is at fault? Why are you such a whiner that when you take a risk and lose and can't man up and swallow a small loss? Do you realize the risk/reward margin? Why are you such a one-way street?

I cannot count the number of times I've bought a graded card online anticipating a potential bump only to find out that it isn't going to happen. You know what I do? I either add the card to my collection or I resell it with a better scan and full description and eat the loss. I don't complain about it. I don't out the seller. I don't go on a public message board sounding like a complete baby.

Exactly. That card is off T/B, L/R, and it has a tilt. Did you really think it would cross to a BGS 9.5? Really?

<<< the eBay scan was smallish >>>

Lesson learned - small scan, large dealer...you can presume it's a low end card, not every time, but almost every time.

If they offer a return then send it back, or I guess it's the "no return on graded cards" thing, and with a no return policy such as that, it likely will be a low end card every time.

another lesson - if ya like a card, but the scan is small, ask the seller to email you a larger scan and a scan of the back...if they don't wanna do it then I say F 'em.

WHAT??!!?? ... you mean all my PSA 9's won't cross over to BGS 9.5s???

That's it! I'm quitting the hobby! ... anyone want to buy 550+ graded Chris Sabo cards?
...oh, and don't even TRY to cross-over the 9's, I just found out they won't!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

So let me get this straight, you've made two online graded card purchases in the last 13 months? Buying a PSA 9 to cross to an 9.5 for a customer. What business model are you following? How do you stay in business with such a vast inventory of two graded card purchases in a little more than a year?

I've seen plenty of ink stained '85 Donruss Ryan's over the years. 4-Sharp's is an ugly 9 no doubt, but that's no reason to complain about them on a public chat board. You should be complaining about PSA overgrading it.

I've purchased some vintage 8's from 4-sharp in the past that I felt were undergraded. I guess I should post them here to balance out the argument.

Really? What is the pop on this card? There is only one BGS 9.5

Let me be clear I am not upset the card would not get a bump at BGS. I know how that game works and rarely participate. I never stated so in my post; I was simply being upfront with my intentions. It was essentially a one-time attempt to provide a favor for a friendly customer, definitely not a business model. I grade some stuff but in general get a far better margin on my raw sales. I certainly do not expect to profit from every purchase. If the card bumped I would have sold it for a small profit. No bump it would have ended up in my collection. This is a common Nolan Ryan card, not a Clemente rookie. I would have no qualms whatsoever if the card did go to BGS and came back with the same mint 9 grade. In that end I would have simply overpaid for a nice mint card. The card was chosen since it had extremely nice edges and corners. I bought the card, not the holder but assumed the holder approximated the grade. I recognized the centering was just slightly off in the original scan but close enough to get a BGS 9 or better subgrade. Centering should be the most objective attribute when it comes to grading but this area is where I see most bumps. With all else looking gem the card looked like it had a good odds for a bump with any grading firm. I am simply not happy the card contains a sizable smudge and does not warrant a mint 9 grade. PSA dropped the ball on this one. The BGS bashers can take solace in the fact I thought those folks would be more liberal on the grade. Yes, I'll probably be out about $10. No, not the end of the world. Just here stating my observations.

cardbender: point well taken. This is not 4SC's fault.

two completely different sets of people.

Levi [of 707 Sportscards] does not carry much by way of modern.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Yep-thats who i was thinking of 707 Mike !!!!!! Ive heard of 4sc, dont think ive ever did any biz with them though
  • So to sum all this up, 4sc has overgraded cards, and don't try and buy up PSA Mint 9's to cross-over to BGS 9.5 Gem Mints?
  • nightcrawlernightcrawler Posts: 5,110 ✭✭
And also in summation, Levi wants big bucks, but he's got big stuff.

Hey that didn't sound right. image
