Would this be a fair trade - Mantle single signed ball for Michael Jordan signed card?

I know some people may say that this isn't the correct forum, but I am not only looking for a trade, I am also looking for opinions. Plus, this forum has more lookers than the BST forum.

I have a Mickey Mantle single signed baseball (see pic below). It is a Bobby Brown Official American League ball. This ball has not been officially authenticated. However, I have a connection (I guess you would call it 2 degrees of separation) with James Spence. James Spence has seen this picture below via email and he says it's good. This ball also comes from a reliable source. Plus, I have examined this ball myself with a loupe and compared it to others. This ball is no doubt the real deal.

I am only 34 years old, so I never saw Mickey Mantle play. However, I did see Michael Jordan play. He was my favorite athlete growing up and I would love to have his autograph. Would it be a fair trade to trade this ball for a Micheal Jordan signed card? Would anybody out there be willing trade? I would, of course, stand behind this ball.

The ball looks right to me.

I think I would rather have the ball, but everybody likes different stuff.

It is likely an eventually doable trade.

I would not trade the ball. Unless it is a signed Jordan rc I would hold onto the Mantle ball. Jordan is a young man and will sign items for many years to come. Mantle on the other hand is dead and the inventory of signed items is not going to get any bigger.

I agree with your reasoning. However, it is still a trade that I am willing to do because I have always wanted a Jordan auto.

looks like a nice bright white ball!

I wouldn't be shocked if you end up finding an even trade before tonite's over.

If I had a Jordan auto it'd be in the mail to you for that.

I don't know the exact numbers for both players, but I have to believe that Mick signed a lot more items that Jordan has ever signed. For Mick, signing autos for money was basically his life for 25 years. Jordan on the other hand had been tough to get in person and now UD owns his signature rights.

I would do the trade if it was for a nice UD certified Jordan on-card auto.

I agree I would only trade for a signed Jordan Rookie... there are lots of on card autos of MJ out there - Upper deck does lots of them each year!

I would ask Poppa J for a quick opinion on the Mantle ball. He is THE Mantle expert around these parts.

I can't see Jordan signatures being worth more down the road...I would keep the Mantle.

Jordan signs in person for any kid at his basketball camp. I know a few people that almost pay for the camp by reselling the autos he signs. it sucks, and will probably ruin it for everyone, but it's reality, at least as of last summer.

I realize that everybody thinks that the Mantle ball is worth more. It's just that I would rather have a Jordan auto. Now, I just need to find someone willing to trade.

  • Why don't you just sell the ball on eBay? With the proceeds from the sale you could buy an Upper Deck Authenticated card and you would probably have money left over. By the way, I have two Upper Deck Jordan Master Collections, which each include an autographed card, and a 1999 Upper Deck Jordan (with Retirement patch) Signed Jersey (Limited Edition to 230 I think). I am not selling either though. image I also have a Mantle signed photo.

The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

I probably will. I just thought I would save a step if someone wanted to trade.

In one of my old SCD's (1981 I believe) I was reading about a show somewhere in the midwest. It was the Mick's first autograph show in the region, and for $5 you got entry to the show and one Mick signed item. At the same show, earlier signed Maris balls were going for $10. image

I would not be surprised if the number of signed Mick items will always outnumber Jordans. MJ just doesn't sign much. And he'll never need to go on the auto circuit like the Mick did during the 80's and 90's.

IMO, keep the ball, its in great shape and a great strong signature.

    Shane,

I'll trade you this MJ signed baseball rookie for the Mantle ball.

    image

The MJ has already passed PSA/DNA quick opinion and I can send you the printed out screenshots of that when I send the card.

I do plan on having the Mick authenticated and would like the trade done on the condition of if either autograph fails full authentication from whatever authenticator we use, either PSA/DNA or JSA, then we could get our original item back from the other person and undo the trade.

Let me know if that sounds agreeable and you have a deal.

    Take care,

That is very, very tempting. I guess I should have been more specific. I would like the card for him to be in a Bulls uniform. I had in mind someone offering one in a Wizards uniform. I didn't think about a baseball card. That signature looks good, and if I traded, it would be on those terms as well. Let me think on it.
