Question about declared value

When subbing cards what do you go by when calculating declared value. Is it just what you would like the card insured for? Is it Beckett? Is it SMR? Is it what you paid?

Thanks in advance.

  • When figuring declared value, I think about how much I would like to be reimbursed if the card is lost or damaged.
  • I have two numbers.

One is the amount I insure for when sending the cards to PSA-I use an amount that is closer to the raw value, about 1/2 of the SMR/Beckett I expect.

The second is the amount I want my graded card insured for on return shipment-what I think the market value of the graded PSA cards is

This particular topic has always drove me crazy with PSA. Lets say for instance you pick up a vintage card say a 1957 Topps basketball #1 Nat Clifton card raw and submit it to PSA. Now for us BBall collectors that is a particulary hard card to come by period with the SMR for a PSA 5 at $120 and for a PSA 8 at $4000. The Beckett Price guide for the raw card says $250 for Ex/mt condition. Lets say you pick up the card for $200.00 and it appears to your eye to be a PSA6.5/7 and visually looks pretty darn good to you and you list the value at $350 fair right? You send it in and to your amazement it comes back a PSA 8 wahoo, but your off about $3650 value wise. PSA will be contacting you to get the extra money. Ok same card it comes back a PSA 4. Now what? I guarantee you will not be seeing a refund on your credit card anytime soon. Talk about win/win.

I have never heard where ebay will contact you for extra insurance money based on the cards' grades. The declared value is simply the amount that PSA will reimburse you if the cards are lost or damaged on their way back to you after being graded. Or am I missing something?

I think what goodlieu was talking about was the level of service...but I could be wrong.

Goddlieu I too have never heard of that happening.

I am under the impression for common cards that it is what you
    want them insured for.

Now if you tried that with a Mantle they may call you on it.

    Good for you.

Mullins is right I was talking about the service level for the grading. I reread my scenario and realize I made that clear as mud.

Thanks for all the info. I have a card that books at $200.00 but I bought for under $100 and is only for that amount to me. I would like to sub it under the group sub. Is it something I can do?
