POSTAL HELP SOS !!

hi and looking for help..sold a card on ebay..sent it out via paypal postal and the cost was 1.35 with dc in a bubble envelope.. I have done this hundreds of times and postage was indeed proper.. buyer tells me he picks up envelope from post office {along with others, the same type} and t he postmaster charged him 3.03 to pick up each envelope and told him if there was cardboard in there, there would have been no charge.. He asked for that 3.03 back but he was a bit surprised.. any help on this matter?? I think the post master was wrong, but was there a loophole i did not know about???? thanks for any quick help.. ivan

<< <i>If it is not 3/4 inch thick you cannot use delivery confirmation, unless you send priority mail. They charge the extra to make up for the difference in first class and priority. I think some buyers probably tell every seller this hoping to get some free money. >>
I always make sure there are some packing peanuts to bulk up the package a bit.
Only way you can hope to get your $$ back is if you handed the envelope to a clerk and had the clerk weigh it, and charge you postage, then it is on them, not you. If you used online postage (paypal etc.) and did the dump and run, it is your fault for not knowing the rules. Refund you buyer, apologize, and hope that the extar $$ that you've made over the years was worth the possible negatives.
Sounds like the Postmaster there is being a pain in the rear, but they are under pressure to perform and make $$ too.
<< <i>Allen is correct, 3/4" thick for DC, or priority rate is charged.

Surely you are not shipping at a loss?
Steve
<< <i>The extra money over the years I think is whatever shipping dough you have collected and not had to use.

To be fair ebay listing fees and paypal fees are not part of shipping costs. $1.35 postage, $.05 topload, $.20 envelope. So your $3.00 fee minus $1.60 costs yields $1.40 extra money. Figure that over years of selling items and you get the money Steve is referring to. Most sellers factor in paper/ink/tape, gas, time, etc. into the general cost of business.
on receipt.
It is quite commonly reported on the EBAY boards.
3/4", or the priority money is due.
Sellers routinely refund the buyer and hope for the best.

As noted, a packing peanut solves the problem.
If it is less than 3/4 inch, they ship priority and charge the shipping difference.

<< <i>guys.. just had to add this.. you are not looking at the at the real problem...if any of you have done this type of transaction, did you have a problem??? the point is you are glad its not you of course.. I have sent out a couple of hundred envelopes like this and received a ton more.. you can see by ebay feedback what i have sold/bought and you will get the picture hopefully...with sending to almost every state, you would think that I am sending out this stuff properly.. and one postal worker does something differently and you guys turn it into how much is made on shipping over the years...FOCUS..enough said..nite all >>
It has nothing to do with your Ebay feedback. That's the post office rules, even if they don't follow them very much. You've been lucky you haven't been dinged before.
<< <i>That's the post office rules >>
That's the problem with do it yourself postage. Any window clerk doing their job properly would have let you know that you are in violation, and would have charged you the Priority rate if you didn't take them back and thicken them.
I don't want to hear that your ebay fees are being paid with your shipping, or your gas to the post office.
If you don' want an answer DON'T ask the question.
It was you that asked:
"what extra money over the years???????"
No one turned it into anything other then what you asked!
Steve
No, YOU are not looking at the real problem, the REAL problem is you did not thicken the
mailer properly.
Steve
to make anyone laugh (at me) and claim my ebay and paypal fees I won't. The PO charged me 13.04 to mail
them. The mailer themselves cost .25 each so add another 2.00, want to add ink? sure go right ahead 1.00?
So basically I spent 16.00 and collected 24.00.
Ivan is the only guy I know that does not make money with 3.00 shipping.

Welcome to the boards!! It's like a shark feeding frenzy around here at times. It's like there is a competition on who can bash the OP first. It's quite comical actually. You look for genuine honest help, and the responses spiral out of control. If you have nothing of substance to add, why post? Some have not taken to heart what their mother taught them...if you have nothing nice to say.......... Lots of trolls out there, with way too much time on their hands.

Ivan - the key part is POSTMASTER.
Apparently your card went to a small podunk office where postmasters work the window. USPS has been pounding PMs with requests to raise revenue, and also with revenue raising hints. Things like media mail, priority boxes turned inside out, and paypal postage sent with lower claimed weight than actual weight are being caught more and more.
Some clerks are lazy and some are very busy and let it go sometimes, others are not.
A postmaster in a small office is concerned about every penny so he doesn't get merged with a bigger office.
It's much more important to follow USPS shipping rules now than it has been in the past.
Just put a packing peanut or a piece of cardboard in there and you'll be ok.

Wrong! He didn't like the answers that several of us provided.
Well isn't that the pot calling the kettle black.
The OP got polite answers and it was only after he became beligarent did the tone change.

Just issue the refund and move on... consider it a lesson learned - from now on just put something extra in the bubble mailer or risk the $3.00 charge back. Sometimes I get lazy and don’t go hunting for the peanut and take the risk – but if a buyer would ask for the money back I would willing give it – not worth the negative feedback.
It was after all your negligence for not putting the proper postage on the envelope.
Steve
<< <i>So did you pay your customer the 3.03?
It was after all your negligence for not putting the proper postage on the envelope.
Steve >>
Steve, it was not negligence of improper postage, negligence of improper packing....no refund on the money......but...he wanted some cards i had and gave him a really nice price on them {lebron rookies} and am going to throw in a nice collection of modern basketball i have laying around.... he was real cool about it and sort of thankful... he had gotten a few of these envelopes in at one time and guess the post office had one employee. the postmaster and he was looking to make some bucks for his branch....now i can go back to gouging buyers...selling 20.00 cards for 2.00 and padding my retirement funds with monies from postage..lol

The few times I have been made to pay extra(3 times), the sellers have taken the item to the window clerk.
When the items arrives the postal workers couldn't even tell me why, just that I owed money, so first they said weight was the reason, and when that didn't make sense they said, I pay or they will send item back.
When I did the math I figured it was the Priority charge.
the next 2 times again the workers could not tell me why, just that I owed it.

I personally would rather go to the PO and send it, may cost a few cents more, but headaches like this do not happen.
<< <i>One thing I was curious about....did the USPS actually send it priority and then have the postage due on it? If they didnt send it priority, then I think it is fraudulent for them to charge it. If they sent it priority due to the size restrictions, then they are justified in charging it by their rules.

Like I mention the 3 times I have been made to pay extra, the sender went to the PO, the PO allowed the DC.

Just because the sending PO does not catch it the receiving one can.
With 3.00 shipping, enough is 'made' over the year to absorb this if caught.
