Can you really trust the BBCE? -- Yes, you can

I recently asked Steve Hart to assemble a four-sport (BB, BK, FB, HK) assortment of packs/boxes from the 1970's and 1980's for $1000. I just sent him a check and asked him to get an assortment of packs and boxes.

I was afraid that I would get nothing but 89 Topps Baseball and similar items.

What I got was

Baseball: Assortment of packs from 1977-1980, + a 1982 Topps Wax Box.
Basketball: A couple of wax packs from 1977, 1978, + one 1980-81 Wax pack.
Football: 1975 Cello Pack, a few packs from the late 70's + a few packs from 1984, 1986 Topps, 2 packs of 1989 score, plus a 1980 Rack Box.
Hockey: 2 packs of 1979-80 Topps, 2 packs of 1984-85 OPC, a couple of Topps packs from the 1988-89 and 1985-86 seasons.

I will start ripping over the weekend.

That's a great idea for guys like me who buy my own birthday and Christmas presents. image

    Happy rippin image
  • Here are the results of my rippage. I spent my entire Saturday ripping packs. Sorry that I don't have any scans, but I'm a lousy scanner.

    Key Cards:

Baseball: 1977 George Brett Topps #580
    : 1982 Bonner/Ripken/Schneider Topps #21

    Basketball:1978 Dennis Johnson Topps #78
    : 1980 Bird/Erving/Johnson Topps #34/174/139

    Football: 1980 Walter Payton (x3) Topps #160
    1980 Ottis Anderson Topps #170
    1980 Phil Simms (x3) Topps #225

Hockey: 1988 Brett Hull Topps #66

Plus lots of semi-key rookies and superstars. Overall, I was very happy with the box/pack selection by BBCE and by the cards themselves. None of the key/semi-key cards had the wax/gum stains, though some had minor surface or centering problems. I got 2 of the cards I always wanted to pull but never have -- the 1980 Bird/Erving/Johnson RC and the Cal Ripken RC. So, overall, I was very happy with the results.

CONDITION OF THE BIRD?? AND RIPKEN??
  • The Bird is probably a 6.5-7. Ripken probably a 7.5 or 8. I am going to submit to a grading service soon and hope for the best. Both have minor surface dots along the edges. Corners and centering on both are decent, probably within the 8 range ...

Well, maybe you'll have better luck at Pokerstars.

Here's a poker tip for ya - if ya got a 7 high hand and someone goes all-in, it's usually a good idea to fold.

    You're welcome.

    Steve:

Perhaps he didn't note the smiley face, wink, wink after your post. It is easy to sometimes overlook an emoticon. It is far more difficult to overlook the obsessive actions of others that demand answers and insult those that may have made a mistake.

Hopefully all is well in YOUR perfect world.

When Steve Hart at Baseball Card Exchange sells unopened packs through eBay or his website, you can rest assured that he has examined the pack, and deemed it to be authentic and unopened.

That being said, (and understood throughout the hobby) anyone who would think that an unopened pack from the 70s that was sold by Steve Hart might contain cards that have pinholes in them is the biggest dope of all, and that is not even debatable. Case closed.

    Edited for spelling.

Nam, just so you know, I'm voting for Storm for poster of the year this year and he should have already won it by now because in my opinion he is the finest poster on this forum, and that's not debatable to me.....no offense to Mike, Rube, and Matt who are great posters as well.....

.....but next year, I've voting for you because nobody here makes me laugh harder...thanks again!
