1986 Topps with no red ink backs

Just thought I share with you guys this card. Back in 86 towards the end of the season I
had a wax case that cards from sheet C were coming with NO RED ink. I hope to get PSA
to holder them. I'm thinking this card should 7. I would accept Authentic too.

Other cards that I had were Henderson and Strawberry. I gave the Henderson to some kid back in the day.

I still have the Straw.

Good for you.

  • Thanks a lot Steve. Now I have a 5000 count box of 1986 Topps to go through tonight.
  • Cool card. Good Luck. PSA sent this card back raw, so I went with BGS.

edited- I think I just tried for the grade thru PSA.

I hope they slab it --- I asked about this card several years ago and the answer was no for a grade but i never thought about auth.
The card is sharp -- the edges look odd - thats due to my scanner, the way I cropped it and the fact that I scanned it as a gif not jpg
Would love to have it in a holder

Do you have any more of these? If so, I would be interested in a Steve Sax, Howard Johnson and/or Kirk Gibson.

I had a Vince Coleman like this a couple of years ago, they're really interesting cards. And the 87's are basically "blackless" backs.

No, sorry, I don't have any for sale or trade.

As far as I know only cards from sheet c produced them.

    Good for you.

If you look at the very bottom of the back at 6:00 you can see what sheet produced what card.

Back when the case that I had was producing these I made sure all the kids that frequented the store

had a shot at getting some. Most packs (if I recall) had 2 or 3 such cards.

I remember a few years ago a guy was trying to sell these cards (commons) for 75.00 each.

    Of course none sold.

I think error cards like that are cool...

...and PSA in my opinion "should" slab it with the error noted, if for some reason they don't.

I agree 100% ---- I want my cards slabbed and would hate to go to the other guys --- this is an opportunity to open the door to a group of unique cards

They should never be part of the registry or if the are they should be unique " 1986 Sheet "C" No Red on Back" set

I absolutely agree. Here's what I wrote on part of the "Info" page on my website:

"I think all young baseball fans collected Don Mattingly cards during his glory years of 1984 to 1989. His 1986 Topps card is, in my mind, one of the perfect cards of the era. It's got a great design and perfectly captures the finish to Mattingly's beautiful swing. Unfortunately, his 1987 Topps card didn't live up to his star status. I have a very clear memory of my first glimpse of that card, and the disappointment it brought. How could Topps use such a boring picture for the best and most collected player of the year?"

Here's a link to the page, if you want to see the rest.

Yes it is.......Though the OPC card does not have the sheet letter indicated anywhere (unless I'm missing something)

Thanks, so my info regarding only cards from sheet C was correct.

I should have said earlier that cards from sheet C are the only ones I've ever seen.

As for OPC I have no idea.

  • Does anybody know the checklist of sheet C cards?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Off hand I don't, but one way to find out is if you have a set is to look at each card.

I'd imagine it would be 132 cards? Maybe less if they had double prints.
