1984 Donruss question

Im thinking about busting a few boxes of 84 Donruss. I love the card designs and the potential in this product. I have never opened this product and would like to know whats everyones experience with centering, corners etc? I'd be getting wax boxes. Sorry if this has been touched on already, but I'd still love to hear opinions. Thanks!

Go to LSUTiger1973, He has busted some of this, and can provide some answers. I had asked a similar question and I believe he told me centering issues were common.

I've busted probably 10 factory sets and 10 wax boxes.
Wax boxes - hit or miss but poor centering is common on tougher issues. Sharpness is excellent on every box I've opened. You'll find lots of well-centered, sharp stars. Ryan, Rose, etc easy to find centered. Mattingly tough to find 50/50. Most come out 60/40 or so.
Factory sets seem to be smaller in size overall but I think the colors are better. Also hit or miss - an entire set will either be great on centering or poor throughout.
Prices on 10s have come down to earth quite a bit but there is lots of PSA 10 potential in each box. Might still be a good deal.

    What he said ^^^

Centering is the biggest issue. Most of the boxes and rack packs I have opened had sharp corners but the centering is all over the place.

How does that happen? In 5 months you flip a common for a smooth $1305 profit.

My guess would be that a seller listed it as a BIN and did not know it was a low pop card. the buyer obviously knew and happened to be the first to see it.

4sc was the original seller. OOPS!

This one stood out to me the most:

The Lonnie Smith, which sold for $1136.11 is currently a pop 10.

Here's the past sales that VCP has record of on this card.

    1/31/09 eBay $1,136.11
    6/7/07 eBay $21.51
    5/6/07 eBay $19.50
    1/28/07 eBay $22.51

I opened a wax case and a half plus a full rack case recently. It's a tough product because you get a lot of cards that the centering is too poor to grade. Pretty much all of the stars are available in such high populations that they are rarely worth big dollars (like on some other sets). You are in essence shooting for a PSA 10 of one of a handful of remaining low pop cards. I submitted about 750 of the cards I pulled. Of those 750 most came back as 9s with 30% to 40% 10s. Many of the cards in true mint condition are not worth grading because the values in PSA 10 are so low. They make for nice raw sets but at the cost of an unopened wax box from a reputable dealer you are not going to make your money back on raw sets. The Ripken is easy to find in PSA 10. You should be able to buy one in PSA 10 for around $30. If you want to buy a wax box and try it for fun, try Steve at Baseball Card Exchange for one box and buy a PSA 10 Ripken on ebay. Otherwise, I think you will be disappointed trying to hunt for low pops in just a few wax boxes.
