PSA Qualifiers and Price Impact

I am somewhat new to the grading world but not completely clueless. I have a question about the impact of a qualifier and the SMR value. Is it fair to say that a qualifier would knock down the PSA number by one? And does it depend on the qualifier? (Ex: ST vs. OC). For example, if there is a PSA 8 OC Banks can I reasonably assume it's SMR value is near that of a 7? Thanks for your input.

  • I would say it impacts by about 2 grades or so

A PSA 8 ST or OC would be a straight 6 or so without quilifiers

I agree with BigWillie ... I believe most collectors would tell you that it knocks the card down TWO full grades. A PSA "9 o/c" would be similiar in price to a PSA "7".

Many times, cards with Qs are VERY difficult to sell at any reasonable price.

    They are best avoided.

It is my understanding that if a card is submitted for grading, and it's an 8oc, but would go for a straight 7, they will give it the 7. If it is lower than a 1 grade drop they automatically give it the qualifier.
So a minimum 2 grade drop would be more accurate.
In regards to SMR value, SMR is theoretical. A better gauge of value would be via actual open market realized prices, using a service such as vintagecardprices.com

The 2 point deduction is only for registry purposes. It is quite possible that depending
on the severity of the OC a card could get a VG 4 or 9OC.

Depending on the card it some cases I prefer the qualifier.
