The dark side of Buy It Now listings.....

I have to admit that the new ebay Buy it Now price structure generally works great for me. I have sold many high dollar cards for a decent return.

However there is a downside.......all of the buyers sending me messages on why their lowball offer is acceptable and I should be happy that they are even willing to buy my cr*p card. Hey I have no problem with someone trying to get a deal but saying that "i usually only pay 15% of book" doesn't really convince me.

Since I sell 99% of the cards I list at the BIN price, the market is telling me that my pricing is fair.

Typically I just ignore these emails even though I would love to send a smart a$$ response back.

I typically reply something along the lines of:

"I appreciate your opinion but I'm confident my pricing stucture will lead to a sale. However, if I am mistaken, I invite you to make an offer on the item after it is relisted for its next 30 day interval."

At that point, they either hit BIN themselves or it indeed sells before I have to relist it.

I had a 1933 Gehrig for sale and about 10 min after I received the lowball email with all his reasons why I was stupid to charge my price the card was bought by another buyer.

There are a lot of stupid people on eBay.

I only sell BIN on fairly high $ cards and get these kinds of requests all the time. Some of the requests are barely readable, much less cordial.

I tend to send a polite, but slightly terse response, such as: "thanks for your interest in my card, but I will pass on your offer of x." There's really nothing constructive that comes out of slamming them for their stupidity (as much as I am tempted). And, several times I've had the guy with the low ball offer come back later and buy the card for the full price.

I usually go the opposite route and try to mock and confuse them at the same time:

    "Dear stupid moron,
If you spent less time being more of a stupid moron and more time being less of a stupid moron, you would be less of a stupid moron. I am better than you.

Say I'm listing a card for $999 that is well within VCP average of last 5.

I get stuff like: $100? No preface, no explanation, just throw out a low ball and see if it sticks. It's sooo tempting to respond back with: $998?

Ultimately the bottom feeders are not my target customer anyway, so I'd rather not have a prolonged email thread which might result if I slam him in my response.

I love it when they try to sweeten the low-ball offer by saying "CAN PAYPAL ASAP!!!!!!!"

LMAO. I am 100% confident none of the bottom feeders that email me crazy offers would understand such circuitous logic. But, I'm glad I wasn't drinking any Mountain Dew right now or it would be everywhere. Very funny.

One idiot got angry at me for not accepting his "book price" offer for my card, even when I showed him recent auctions where the card went for 3x his "book price." He said that if Beckett says a card is worth X, then it's worth X, and anyone who tries to say otherwise is a liar and a thief.

One of our very own here at CU is quite the lowballer, and has been known to respond with angry, condescending comments if his ridiculous offer isnt accepted.

Do you have low balls hanging from your truck's trailer hitch? Those are classy. I always get queasy driving behind such cars as the low balls get too close to the ground for my comfort.

If buyers can't even word an offer with reasonable grammar, spelling, sentences, ..... it doesn't deserve a response.

I add all idiots to my blocked bidder list. Lowballers too.

To me all offers are responded to with the same courtesy they are given to me.

I also cannot stand people who ask 'what's your best price?', when the item is already listed as a BIN with no offer indicated. Hey idiots, my price is listed, it's called make a counter offer, or your email is ignored.

Another annoyance is the unsigned emailed offer. At least have the common courtesy to tell me your first name. It's rude to not mention that in an unsolicited email/offer.

Good point. The "what is your lowest price" email is also a pain. The loser already know what lowball offer he going to toss out, go ahead offer so the autoreject can do its job.

I know who nam is talking about. I have several of his lowball offers on my stuff. In his defense, I think he is just fishing for a deal. He has never tried to follow-up with lowball #2 and a nastygram.

Despite all of the additional email cr*p, BIN is the way to go for high dollar cards. Set it and forget it!

Why am I not surprised that this is on the back of a Ford truck... did you hear the new 2010 F150 comes with built-in spit cup and Toby Keith gun rack?
