Coin show report

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,606 ✭✭✭✭✭
It is a three day show, April 17-19 and is called Gold and Silver Expo 2009. It used to held in Niagara Falls but now has been moved to Hamburg, NY which is south of Buffalo and a longer drive for moi. The Buffalo Numismatic Association sponsors the show.

This is the only three day show in Western NY and is advertised as having 100 tables. Here is the schedule of events. The show is very collector oriented with a large program for Scouts. Last year it seemed there were more Boy Scouts there than bourse. Even ran into a couple of my students.

I should be there at the opening on Friday. If anyone in the area is attending let me know.

Show is starting tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be well attended, supposed to be the nicest day of the year tomorrow.

Just got back from a short trip to Toronto. Some observations:

    1. "Speed Limit? We don't need no stinkin' speed limit". Why do they even have it on the QEW? No one comes close to obeying it.

    2. Has there ever, in the last 20 years, been a time when there wasn't some work being done on the QEW between Queenston and the Gardner Expressway? Come on, it is only about 70 miles or so. Do Canadians continuously work on their roads?

    3. Toronto is a pain in the arse to drive around.

    4. I am convinced there is more construction doing on in Toronto than the whole of NYS.

    5. There are some heck of a good musicals up in TO.

    6. Why the heck must one pay $18/day to park at a hotel they are staying at?

I may end up working at the Registration desk if they need help.

Man, I wish I could go. But I'm not sure I'll even be able to make the Syracuse show this Sunday.

And I'll agree on the Canadian highways, on my side of the lake the signs seem to be meaningless... going to Kingston it might as well be a country road, only with speeding hatchbacks instead of mud covered pickups.

Arrived at the show about 10 minutes after opening. Seemed to be a good crowd there already. There were about 90 tables with 45 or so different dealers. Many dealers were the typical local guys who set up at the local monthly shows but also quite a few dealers from Ohio, PA, and Ct.

I wasn't feeling too well so I only stayed about an hour on the bourse floor. My only puchase was a Krause book on World currency that cost me $10. I think it is from 2002. I needed on for my library and figured $10 wasn't too bad.

I talked to a few people I know. Looked at a few coins. One coin I saw that really interested me was a Roman coin, Faustina, in Unc. that a dealer from Ohio has. He only had Ancient and World coins. I'll probably go back to the show tomorrow and take another look at it.

Tried to sell some PCGS Canadian coins. No one was interested. Tomorrow I may bring a couple PCGS Indian Cents and try to sell them so I can raise some $ to buy a coin or two.

Their loss. I hope that you'll be feeling better tomorrow and will complete a trade/sale or two.

Ajaan - Did you get the job at the hotel registration desk? If not, don't let it get you down. Someone's gotta be hiring somewhere.

MrEureka, after spending a day with Middle School students, a hotel job would be a welcome respite, but no, they didn't need any help at the registration table.
