What is a widget?

First, I owe Blu62vette another huge thank you for his patients, kindness and excellent photography. He just wrapped up another 30 coins for me. Link.

Some of the coins he provided two or three images that show the coin in slightly different ways.

So now the question for the forum. On a similar thread posted last week, I apologized that the coins I was able to provide to Blu62vette were widgets by forum standards. I received a number of comments that lead me to believe that I don't have a very good calibration regarding what is or is not a widget.

I was under the impression a widget is any common date common grade coin.

What is your definition of a widget?

    I'd assume it's how they refer to coins that are readily available in the more common grades. A coin that you could find without assistance or a long search, less-than-key dates in less-than-top grades, does that make sense?

    Most of what I purchase falls into this category, but I don't mind it a bit. I'm more interested in a coin's history than it's rarity (good thing, too, considering my budgetimage).

    I always thought widget was just a fancy way of saying "thingy" image

    Great coins and pics image Made me realize how long it's been since I've even looked at lightside stuff! image I've really gotta get a trime one of these days...

    Large mintage, easily obtainable and cheap.

    At least that's what I always thought a widget was.

    What Roman said but not necessarily cheap. A Widget can be a $20 St Gaudens in MS63.

    A lot of non-widget material there. Widgets are things like the Merc's, Washintons, Franklins, and yes even the gold buff's. Widget doesn't mean cheap, just easily obtained anytime you want one.

    To me it is a derivitive term used by snobs to try amd make themselves look better, and make whoever their target is feel bad because they are not a high roller.

    I will never use it.

    I do not like the term and I make my best efforts not to use it.

    Let me add, I think the term is a non-term and shouldn't be used.

    I always thought a Widget was a token or medallion of some sorts that was not intended for circulation. War Tokens, tax tokens, medals of sorts.... you get the point...
