Chicago Sun-Times - Who's going?

I'll be there ready to splurge. I'm considering getting a Bob Feller autograph, but do the lines take forever and a day? His auto is pretty cheap to purchase.

EDIT: Oh yeah - this is the first card show my fiance will have attended. Hopefully she'll be overwhelmed with the awesomeness of this hobby and maybe get interested. Haha, pipe dream.

Normally they call off number sequences such as "Bob Feller is now autographing ticket numbers 1-100" and that is your signal to get in line if you have one of those numbers. Then they move on to the next group such as 100-150, 150-200, etc. IF you miss your group you can always get in line if you have an autograph ticket number that has already been called. Mr. Feller has signed for so many people over the years that there is not normally long lines, but he does like to chat with fans so it might be awhile in line. I can't get to the Sun Times show this weekend, but I have attended quite a few and there is usually something for everyone if you are willing to look and spend time at different dealers' tables.

This may sound silly but don't take your fiance. When my wife goes with me to shows she's asking me periodically when we are leaving. My response is I hope I find a bunch of stuff cheap and they have to literally kick me out of the door. I love looking through vintage cards. Most spouses are okay for about 3 hours. After that it can get annoying. I try to go to shows alone. JMHO. Enjoy the show.

I'm going, but I've heard it's not going to be a great show. I talked to quite a few dealers who are not attending and are normally regulars.

    Sportsfest was cancelled this year.

Bill Walton: great comment, I try to stick with WASP or Mercyful Fate when I take my wife to a concert.

Gentlemen, you're missing the best benefit of bringing your significant other to a show. You can leave them in line for autographs while you look through dealer tables! My fiance is usually more than willing to meet a player and stand in line and gab with whomever for an hour or two. Since I rarely care about the meeting the player experience, it works out great. Plus, then she's usually willing to look around after that. Suffice to say I may be the one person at a card show hoping for long autograph lines image

That and stand in line for food and carry cases of cards and supplies to the car because only she knows where it's parked after dropping you off at the front door.

Reasons why to bring your other!!

    1) Keep the dealers out allnight dancing and drinking. Then they feel like they owe you something in the morning. Have her sneak them a kiss!!!!! WORKS EVERYTIME lol
    2) They pay half the room if not all because you bought to much.
    3) They pay half the bar and dinner tab if not all because you bought to much.
    4) Extra set of hands to log things around.
    5) Alway there to remind you its about cards.
    6) Because shawn(head bartender) at gibsons always always sais its on him when she pays.
    7) Just nice to have at 2am...
    8) Extra set of credit cards, checkbook, and CASH!!!!
    9) Forum buddies will like her more than you.
    10) Lastly BECAUSE YOU LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morgoth and I went... good times. Morgoth did pretty darn well... ended up going home with several new cards, including a '55 Bowman Mantle PSA 7 that looks to have a great shot at a .5 bump.

Personally, I picked up a great '75 topps Baseball set w/ a PSA 8 Brett, Yount, and Carter.

Nice croud, lots of vintage... typical high prices though.

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

OH YA, and a $20,000 '68 Topps 3D Roberto Clemente PSA 10 was stolen off a guy today too...

Not sure of ALL the details, but I guess he turned his back for a second, and then it was gone! OUCH!

The show was considerably smaller than the last few years. Still a good place to pick up vintage commons though.

At the last Chicago show I was listening to a dealer complain about having a very expensive set stolen. He had sets stacked up at the back of his area along the dealer behind him (where people could walk). I remember thinking if it was so expensive - wouldn't you leave it in a locked case? The Clemente sounds terrible - but why would you leave it someplace it could be stolen if you turned your back? Too bad nonethelss - hopefully whoever it is will recover it.

I haven’t been to a show in a while and I thought this show kind of sucked for what I was looking for. If you were just interested in stuff from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s then you would have had a blast. I went there to finish off some sets from the 80’s and early 90’s and I had no luck. I also wanted to buy a bunch of graded wax from the 70’s and 80’s and there wasn’t one dealer selling any large quantity of wax other then over priced stuff from 07-09. I did manage to find the pack of 77 series 4 Star Wars I was looking for($11). I would have much rather had if graded from PSA but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

I did manage to find a few deals that I wish I took more advantage of. I picked up a box of 87 Fleer wax for $20 and a rack box of 89 Fleer basketball for $40. The guy was kind of shady looking and his booth was far from attractive and I figured the rack box was picked through. After I got home I counted and checked out the rack box and all 24 racks were there and all three Jordan stickers were still in the box.
