  • Realised on line now.

I went to the saturday auction as I was interested in a few lots. The Ronald Harris peices where going well over estimates and as I needed to go after about 5 hours and things were going very slow I had to leave a couple of bid on the Davies stuff. By the looks most of his lots were going lowside of estimate and I've got mine for well under my max bids. Picked up a nice piece from the Sunday session so that makes it three out of three. The disapointment is that if I could have stayed on I would have picked up 2 or 3 more. When I left after a bit more than 4 hours they were less than half way through.
  • Looking at the results pretty much all of Harris's lot went and for good prices. On the other hand it looks that less than 70 of about 240 of Davies's lot sold. Looking at the photo's Davies's collection looked pretty avarage whereas Harris's very top grade. It just goes to show that selling on a name doesn't always work out.

Just got confirmation that I won lots 1945 + 2515 (both Canadian tokens) and got blown out of the water on lot 2266.

looks like I went 2 for 4, although the one I REALLY wanted, I was the first underbidder

overall though, i'm happy for what i paid:

    1901 Half-Crown, former PCGS MS64. paid 120 pounds.

1902 Japan yen. a truly stunning coin, both sides are an easy MS66 paid 130 pounds, if i recall
(the reverse is no longer shown on their site, but equally as nice as the obverse)

Doug, if the yen gets an MS66 for 130 pounds, you've got a real bargain there. In my experience, MS66 and MS67 yens (any dates) go for much much higher when slabbed. Congrats on the halfcrown too. Did they crack it out prior to the sale?

thanks! Yeah, i'm just going by the pictures with grading, and we all know how that can be. however, they had huge Heritage sized pictures (larger than the ones I show here), so it made it a little easier when looking at the lots.

there was only a half dozen or so slabbed coins, the rest were all cracked out before the auction, and the noted the former grade and service.

In fact, if you look at the London Coins website, they now own (or have always owned?) CGS, the British grading company. Because of this, all of their regular inventory of former NGC and PCGS coins are now (surprise!) CGS slabbed. It is a ton of coins that the two US services can no longer claim; it was bound to happen I guess.

i looked on Coinarchives, and the last MS66 that sold at auction ( a PCGS example in 2007) went for $2500. If i can get it graded at that level, then i'll be quite happy with my outcome!

Yes, I was only successful on one lot, the 1853 1/4d proof and lost on eight or so despite generous bids.

I think that the Harris coins went generally for high, but this was more for the better lots and a few of the middle bits; lesser bits brought mild money. Davies hyper-varietals got their just desserts in my opinion as they were generally not better presentation specimens.

I guess I was disappointed by my results but was excited by so many bits coming on the market. I wonder what will happen in the secondary market?? So something of a feeding frenzy - I do not have proof but wonder if this sale represented a nadir for such coins (hope not as this is the era and type that interest me).
