Raw 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle Sells For $877.00

This Raw 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle ended with a high bid of $877.00. Even though the card is sharp looking and the seller "guarantee[s] this card is AUTHENTIC and UNTRIMMED or your money back," I would be hesitant to spend that kind of money on a raw card. The final bid price is comparable to what a PSA 8 would sell for. Do you think the card would grade at least a PSA 8?

P.S. The seller has a history of getting "good" prices for raw cards.

In this age of 3rd party grading, I am amazed that some people do not have high dollar cards graded.
This guy must have a loyal follwing of customers.

If you search you'll find other threads here about Great Lakes Auction House. Their business model is to buy graded, crack, and sell raw. Guaranteed this was a 5 or 6 graded with a flaw that you can't see in the scan.

Probably an 8 oc that could have been a 7. Greed of buyers and the 100% perfect feedback helps them with this contrarian model.

    VCP Avgs:

    PSA 8 is $957

    PSA 7 is $408

No way I lay out that kind of coin for a raw card I couldn't hold first

He's absolutely correct. While it may not be a 5 or 6, it has some flaws that are not obvious in the scan.

To their credit, they do disclose the imperfections but only after the glowing reviews. For example (note bold):

<< <i>This, 100% authentic, 1960 Topps baseball Mickey Mantle #350 card is breathtaking NEAR-MINT to MINT looking condition and has FANTASTIC centering. This virtually flawless HOFer's card also displays: numerous pack-fresh qualities, "perfect" original sheen, not a single surface blemish, amazing crisp photographic imagery(must c), spotless snow-white clean borders, "flawless" factory finish and, and has no creases. The corners are SHARP with tip touches...amazing corners, plz look closely at images to see how nice they are(amazing). The back of this "SHOWCASE" card is clean with a tiny factory tone speck at bottom border(hardly even noticed). >>

There's a thread about their selling MO and before/after cards have been identified.

Bet $100 that card was purchased less than 6 months ago in a slab.

That is a bit high for raw. I will say that I bought a '73 Clemente from him listed as "mint" and it did indeed grade out at a PSA 9. Realize that a '60 Mantle is a much higher value card, but I've found his descriptions to be quite accurate. Like waverly82, though, he does NOT discount bad centering.

That's right - in my opinion definitely a good con, that's for sure.

Remember the good ol' days when you could notify a buyer to warn him of things like this?

Probably one of the worst eBay decisions ever made!
