Thoughts/Info on New Zealand's $5 silver wildlife series?

As some of you know, I recently got the silver tuatara and am very impressed. It got me looking through past issues. This seems like a very nice series with very low mintages. I thought some of you here might know if there's much interest in it? Are there any key dates? It looked like they missed a year here and there? Whatever anyone knows will be of interest. I note they seem to be at a pretty good premium from various sellers, but don't know if those are artificially high prices or not.

Oh, and one specific question: on the NZ Mint website they list a mintage limit of X for the individual coin AND Y for the set containing it. Do these two numbers need to be added together for the total mintage?

Thanks everyone! I'm out of town for a week, so may not be able to respond 'til then!

I like animal low mintage coins.
I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

  • I just picked up a Trinidad and Tobago $5 with a Scarlet Ibis on the reverse. Mintage is only 472

I find myself really liking the NZ issues, but they're a bit on the pricey side. I'd really love to put together a MS69 Kiwi set some day.

    GritsMan,
There's just far too many medal-coins being churned out for New Zealand.

The New Zealand Mint has never struck New Zealand's medal-coins,but it has struck them for both the Cook Islands & Fiji though.

New Zealand's coinage is the BEST. I'm a huge fan of the endangered birds dollars. They have excellent quality. They have a small enough number of unique series that it is possible to complete a type set of either circulating or NCLT coins.

  • Be very careful with New Zealand coin sets. Last year a boxed set of $1.00 kiwi coins was produced by New Zealand post. Only the 2008 coin was genuine. IMHO All the other coins in the set were re strikes as they were struck in 2008 not the date listed on each coin. This was despite NZ post having listed final mintage numbers in the years 2004-2007. They argued that as the original mintage limits were not filled they could produce more of the earlier dated coins. A number of collectors complained and even the New Zealand Royal Numismatic Society wrote to NZ post before the issue suggesting the re strikes be appropriately marked. NZ post regarded that marking the coins as suggested would damage the market......and they made no effort to inform collectors outside of New Zealand of the re striking. I anticipate many bought the sets not knowing they were restruck.

    Welcome aboard,Ian!

You're not wrong about that.To me,even the restrikes are a real have.

I'm hoping that Howard Mitchell in Auckland mentions about the restrikes in his new edition of the New Zealand banknote & coin catalogue.

    Hey Everyone!

Thanks for the good input--and interesting asides! Pretty intriguing about the restrikes! I'll probably stick to their annual animal issues for now, but would love any other thoughts/opinions/factoids about these.

    Best,
