Coins and Bicycles

This past weekend, I went to Indianapolis for the day on Saturday and visited the North American Handbuilt Bicycle Show. It was a very memorable trip, and the show floor was like a candy shop. Ahearne Cycles was there, and I chatted with the owner. On two of his show bikes, at the top of the front fork, he had brazed in coins, two per bike. One bike had Irish pennies (sorry, I did not get the date), and the other had 1969 French 2-franc coins. He and I talked coins a bit, and he pulled out a few others from his pocket, including a USSR aluminum (I think) piece. I showed him my 1922 U.S. Peace Dollar that I carry as a pocket piece, because it's the year that my mother was born, and she is still going strong.

It's great when hobbies coincide, as they did here for me: bicycling and coins!

My favorite crossover coin connecting the two hobbies is the 2003 French Tour de France centennial commemorative. The obverse has a modern bicyclist riding to the viewer's left at the top, and an early 20th Century rider going the opposite direction on the bottom. The superb design has the riders sharing bike wheels, separated by an arcing segment of bicycle chain.

I was on the Monnaie de Paris website ordering the €1.5 .900 silver proof (mintage 150,000) about three minutes after learning about it. The picture is from that website:

There are also €.25 silver (mintage 150,000) and €10, €20 and €50 gold proof versions (mintage 50,000).
