Think This 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky SGC 96 Would Crossover To A PSA 9?

Do you think this 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky SGC 96 would crossover to a PSA 9? The scan isn't the greatest, but I'm inclined to say no. But if yes, even the $4,000.00 BIN price would be a pretty good price.

no, even for that card those are some rough edges....
  • To small of a scan to really say. I've seen PSA 9's that were really rough and i have no problem with them. The centering looks fine on both the front and back. Maybe not perfect 50/50 but i've seen alot worse. SGC is just as hard as PSA. SGC is not as tough on centering then PSA but again no problem on the centering from what i can see. Since most people are stuck on PSA being the best they tend to bash the other companies. Ask for a better scan and judge for yourself. I think you will find that it should pass into a PSA 9 holder. But since it isn't you could probably get the card for 2500.00.

Attorney? Yes. Wealthy? Definitely not. In any case, I requested an obtained a much larger scan of the card. On review, I am going to have to say no to a PSA 9 ... on crossover OR crack and resubmit, to wit:

Am dubious that the card now residing in that SGC 96 holder was the card that earned the grade. Kudos to the seller for giving you the scan though.

There is no way I was going to pull the trigger on this card without doing some homework. So I did some checking and came across the following:

Back on or about March 5, 2008, Rose-City-Sports this Gretzky to aokahu for $4,550.00 under ebay item no. 160209293476 (which is no longer available). I emailed the seller/Rodney the following question:

"Can you give me a history of this card? Did you submit this card raw to SGC for grading? Do you know if it has ever been reviewed by PSA for a crossover, review or any other kind of service?"

    Aokahu responded:

"HI, I purchased the item off of e-bay it was already graded as you see it now. I do not know the exact card shop I purchased it from but it was not from a private individual. I never had it crossed graded myself ........card has been storied in a lock box at the bank until today. The card has brilliant color, Thanks for looking at the item."

I then email Rose-City-Sports the following:

"Can you provide some history on the card? Did you have the card originally graded by SGC? Do you know if PSA has ever reviewed the card? Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated."

    Rose-City-Sports responded:

"We sold the card on consignment, and I don't know too much about the history of the card. To the best of my knowledge it wasn't reviewed by PSA for crossover."

For me, I think I'll pass.

I think you made a good call passing on it. I collect this set and even though PSA gives allowances for rough cuts, man are they ugly when you see them maginified like that!!
  • I disagree with you guys, maybe because I like the rough cuts so much. Especially on that powder blue border. That nice white frayed edge really stands out. image

I'm glad PSA doesn't fault a card for it. And I think this card could/should easily make it into a 9 holder.

The whole right side of that slab looks suspect

    I agree.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

i am in agreement with nightcrawler. i think that is easily a psa 9. psa will not downgrade for the rough cuts on OPC.

unless the back is out of whack, i'd say a psa 9.

    Thanks,

The question was "Do you think the card would cross to a PSA 9." NO. You have a better chance of winning the lottery. If you crack it out, I'd say 50/50. Just my opinion, and actually I'm a strong supporter of PSA, but there is no such thing as crossovers on high value cards. You get "minimum grade" almost every time even if the card is a slam dunk crossover. Sorry, but that is the reality.

I agree with nightcrawler. From all the Gretzky's I've seen, this is a pretty nice one. The lower left corner doesn't look quite mint-sharp, but it could be from the cut. I also like rough cuts.

I have a '66 Phily Starr PSA 9 that is so rough cut on one edge that it looks like a picket fence. So PSA is pretty forgiving on rough cuts if they're inherent in the issue.

Most PSA 9 or SGC 96 cards with colored borders, will look terrible under this much magnification. In fact, most cards in general would look awful blown up to this size.

I'd give it a 50/50 shot at crossing to PSA 9. Maybe worth the risk.

In the past, I've crossed SGC 96's to PSA 9's successfully about 40% of the time. Although my sample of crossovers is relatively small (maybe 30 cards).
