I decided to build a 1986 Topps Baseball Registry Set...,

I figure I would "set-build" an affordable set, so I picked the 1986 Topps baseball set in PSA 10.
After talking with some "big-time" sellers, who do a ton of submitting cards to PSA, I now realize just how tough this "set-build" will be for me.
How about this. I picked-up a PSA 9 Nolan Ryan for $ 8.50. If you want a 1986 Topps Nolan Ryan in PSA 10, guess how much it could cost you?
Well somewhere, my guess would be: (edit

Just too crazy!
So, the PSA 9 Ryan at $8.50 works just fine for me. Plus I'll try cracking some 1986 cases and see if I "strike lightening"! LOL!

<< <i>Just a thought on the Nolan Ryan issue. What do you think if you bought 10 Nolan Ryan 9's and cracked them all out and submitted them together. Don't you think at some point one would look a little better than the other 9 and you might get a 10? Just a thought. You would be out under $200 instead of $2000. >>
I'd get back 5 psa 9s and 5 psa 8.5s from PSA!

fwiw thats the cleanest ryan Ive seen to date ( bluesky anyway). Still looks like it has the bleed in the jersey.
on you venture goodluck I'll do my best to push you along! 100 or so are leaving the door today or tomorrow. This time around I think I have psa's # lol. My prior sub which turned me a decent amount of 10's I went back through and picked up on what they see. Anything with a sunflair or fishey is going to the 8 pile on this set I just wish they'd grade 81's the same.
To add to your thread your ryan cost 8.50 the common 9 will cost you 3 the 10 will cost 20 somethings wrong with the picture.
Good luck!!! You can do it 800 cards aho
I've only bought three 1986 Topps Baseball PSA 9s, so far!
1. - John Denny @ 99 cents!
2. - Nolan Ryan @ $8.50
3. - Cal Ripken Jr. @ $5.00
P.S. Did get out bid ($1.76) for a 1986 #220 Bob Horner PSA 9! Lol !!

When those kids get to midlife I can see them trying to rebuild that set.

I think you're right about this. I was "this close" to starting this set for the very reason you mentioned - it was the first set I really actively collected as a kid. But then I submitted a group of cards that I thought would grade well and I got mostly 9s with a few 8s and no 10s. So I changed direction and decided to start the 1953 Bowman Color set.
Those cards are truly tuffies to find in gem.

I wonder why this card went for $73.00
Is it because of red sox collectors? Most of the latest 1986 psa 10 "commons" sales were between $10-$25 (even for 1/1's!)...

If I was to sell my raw set the tag would be 500 bucks lol seriously and I might balk at that. Ive opened 10 6-box rack cases-vending case-and a set case. Most of the goods are still with me. I did pitch about 100 thousand in the dumpster 5 years ago.
Its the most time consuming set Ive ever dealt with. Not only the 800 cards but the reverses you think you have a gem then flip it over and paper breaks in the black on the back ughh next. Then the fisheyes or flairs hatem.
Could have used that lol marty's on the psa sub twice hopefully I can get 50 haha.
Yeah not sure I most of my sales were 25-50 for 1-2's pop 3 weaver garnered 50. Sutcliff pop 1 didnt get touched at 35 Im holdin till season...

dont get it so barret, who's he lol then gedman goes for 24 hmm did you run it up? Looks like a topall.
yeah those prices are in line from what Ive seen in the past 6 months, Im sure msohn if sure glad you came around hehe.
if im sellin 86 10's Im gettin 20 no matter what or I wont let it go. just to hard to get them in the holder we'll see on this next sub i spent plenty of time and anything even the smell of a touch went into my raw so Im hopin for 35 percent in 10's otherwise its not worth the effort.

Red Sox and Mets PSA 10's from 1986T have historically carried a premium.
