Marginally OT: Repairs to books, papers, documents

This is a serious post.

I have some books and papers that need some restoration. Instead of using scotch tape to mend 2 pieces of paper together, what other archival ways are there in doing this? The scotch tape method works well, but in the long run, it deteriorates and dries out while leaving residue on the paper. Sometimes if two surfaces come into contact the tape sticks to what is on top or following it as in a book situation.

Perhaps there is a transparent archival material out there to help mend pieces together?

I am looking around and I see that I need to mend: book jackets (perhaps reinforce as well), some pages of books, and other paper base products.

Any insight is appreciated.

  • Look up your local scrapbooking store. They will tell you which things you need. There are lots of adhesives sold there that are archival safe, as well as book binding tape.

There is also an online store that sells items for people preserving more important documents but the name is escaping me right now. Talias or something like that.

    paper fix

    ......

    Experiences:

1: Many fair fixes can be made without the extra paper.

    2. The down and dirty way to fix a rip is:

    a: Half-Cup Minute Rice.

    b: Clean Water.

c: Mash the rice and Make a thin paste.

d: Use a Soft Paint Brush to join the rip. (Get paste on the edges of the rip and 1/4" out.)

e: Press with high-grade waxed-paper on both sides of document/page.

f: Next day, remove the waxed-paper and the two parts should be one again.
