Lightsider amazed at darkside collection yesterday
At an invitation to an open house, my son, notlogical, and I took a trip to Lincoln, NE yesterday to hear a phenominal story and world coin collection. Although only a sampling of the collection was out for viewing, it is a fascinating story and I thought about sharing the story here. Hope you enjoy it. Dodge Collection

Interesting. It's a shame to put the site up without having listed more than a small fraction. Seems to be underselling, because people won't come back.
Thanks for the post.

<< <i>And what he was doing seems to be collecting every single coin, of every different type (if not also by date), of every country (and even non-country), that he could find. >>
OFEC as an obsession perhaps
Wow!
Thanks for posting this, but watch out, Notlogical may be seduced to the darkside

But to put a light touch on it... at least we can say Mr Dodge was definitely NOT a numismatic failure!

amen!
Obscurum per obscurius
This was part of the return email:
"Incidently, that is the most eclectic collection of countries I've been asked about yet, Most people want a single country or empire; you want four of the most different countries imaginable"
Yep that's me...though I might have described the list I sent him as schizophrenic
I am hoping to upgrade some of the allegedly low value, common coins in my Japanese Dansco--early to mid 20th century. Those have been the hardest for me for some reason!
I threw in a few dream coins just in case...I suppose I don't HAVE to contribute to my IRA this year....I mean just no telling what this guy was able to collect.
I really hope there is something for me, so I can keep a piece of this story alive. Especially any Japanese coins from someone who was a Sailor long before I joined the Navy.
Again, thanks for the link!!

Some countries have prices.
Edit....NZ and South Africa have prices
Why are checks being made payable to him?
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

You know, that's a good question! I believe I will have to check on that if he comes back with anything good for me to buy!

I can't imagine how overwhelmed a family dealing with a collection that vast would feel. Getting help was the thing to do, and I believe googling the name would help

Here's Larry's bio Dr. Lawrence J Lee and an article he wrote for E-Sylum Coins and Museums
I'll give another hint too:
"The founder and director of NUMMUS is Lawrence J. Lee, PhD. Dr. Lee is the former director of the American Numismatic Association Money Museum in Colorado..."
Did I mention how cool this story is? We sometimes beat ourselves up about the whole 'numismatic failure' concept and how something could be better, more complete, 'finished' etc. I wonder what Mr. Dodd felt about his collection as a whole? I wonder what he thought would happen to the collection eventually.
Too bad I didn't win the lottery--how fun to have been able to buy the collection in it's entirety and spend years going through it without any pressing concerns about, oh say going to work or even 'liquidating' in a timely fashion.
