  I don't think it's terribly difficult - but I wouldn't say, for sure, that one has original surfaces though...

  It's easier to find a cleaned one, but original pieces can be found.

  that one is probably not "cleaned" as the two main grading services see it, but probably dipped and starting to tone over. i've seen a fair number dipped in slabs from both services, but i don't like the look of them; too un-natural looking. I've also seen a boatload of harshly cleaned/scrubbed ones too that just look bad; but the one that Andy posted is an example of the "look" that I much prefer for these.

  Unless I missed something er.... obvious, that coin is either counterfeit or has an altered date. The Mexico City mint stopped making those quite some time prior to 1835.

  actually this type was a while before that, but you're correct. I believe that's an 8 over 7, though. That is quite a time span for an overdate though. Very interesting coin.

  I would guess that most above XF would have some type of cleaning or dipping.
  
  I think in the end it all comes down to eye appeal and does it look natural.

  Interesting counterfeit, Andy.
  
  I think it's too well executed to be a contemporary. Perhaps end of 19th century, beginning of 20th. The die work is pretty impressive. I'm surprised it went for over $500, however.
